Pre-GM Saabs had their issues (and some turned out to be real lemons) but generally speaking, they were more reliable and easier to repair than the models that came after the 1990s.
They may have been less technologically advanced and slower, but they were much better built. A 900 from the 70s or 80s had fewer problems than one from the 90s or a later 9-3.

The V4 was a Ford engine, straight from their production line. And the legendary B and H engines, among some of the best engines out there, were based on the archaic Triumph slant-4. SAAB never had large budgets. It was always about making something great with small budgets. Usually it worked out, but at times not.
