1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme review from North America

"The Cutlass had style, but badly needed Honda Quality."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Where do I start? This car has been slowly killing me. But I love it!

-After the first 2 months I had to replace the water pump.

-6 months after that, the oil pump blew, and I decided to replace the engine with a re manufactured olds 307 (if I had known better, I would've opted for a small block Chevy engine).

-The AC conked out after 2 years, and could not be recharged.

During the 2 years after engine replacement, it ran like a dream. Then the problems crept back:

-The turn signals and flasher stopped working.

-The cruise control failed.

-The rear defroster went kaput.

-The windshield sprayer deep six-ed.

-The transmission blew out after 3 yrs.

(Came Very close to chucking the car then, but I reasoned it was my fault as I was driving 65 in Low gear because the shift lever is a great place to rest your hand,NOT. So much for shift lockout)

-Radiator fizzled after 9 years.

*Gas has cost me the equivalent of a good post graduate degree, which I really need.

The interior has held up very nicely though. Only had to replace the headliner after 4 years.

General comments?

The car has been and still is very comfortable.

My 307 is very emissions touchy, and I get dusted by Geo Metros because of that. I take pride in the fact that I can slice them in half with my cutty tho..

The styling cannot be beat, but GM just got lazy on a lot of the engineering design (i.e. why is the everlovin oil pan blocked by a nogoodnik cross member?) They seemed determined to make it really hard on do-it-yourselfers. Thanks GM/Olds!
