1990 Nissan Bluebird Premium (Saloon) review from UK and Ireland

"Rubbish to look at, great to drive!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Upon acquiring the car it hadn't had a service in over 3 years so it needed a new exhaust and steering re aligned (to go straight you had to have the wheel turned approximately 45 degrees to the left!!) but amazingly nothing else was wrong with it.

Radiator had a small leak after a couple of months, I put some sealant in, but all that seemed to do was make it overheat. One £90 new radiator later and still had the same problem! In the end all it was, was a knacker-ed thermostat! Oh well You learn by your mistakes! Since then though its flown through every service and MOT.

General comments?

Once fixed it has prov en to be a very reliable car. However...

Cons:

Design is awful, definitely an old mans car.

Very fast acceleration for 1.6 up-to around 40mph, but from 40mph and up its shockingly slow.

The tires are far too thin for the car, don't even think about taking a corner fast!

Not a good car for the winter. It drives terribly when the engines cold and regularly cuts out, due to the revs being too low. My mechanic can't work out why it does it either.

Pros:

Bodywork very strong, no rust whatsoever (car is 14 years old)

Once you do eventually get to motorway speeds however it is very comfortable and happily cruises along at 90mph.

Unusually low driving position, handy if your over 6ft tall!

Interior looks dated, but is of good quality (no rattles), tears in fabric etc.

Boot space is vast and same goes for the bonnet. You feel very safe in the car because of its size.

Good all round visibility.

Power steering incredibly light. Its handy for urban driving, but at higher speeds I'd prefer a stiffer wheel.

Insurance is pretty good for a car this size.

Overall its not a bad car for its age, its main problem is its hideous looks and slow acceleration past 40mph. I'd guess the bigger engined models cure this problem however. I'd give it 7/10.
