1996 Daewoo Cielo GL 1.5 Litre petrol

Summary:

Good car to drive as its cheap to run and gets the job done

Faults:

Timing Belt at about 88 000.

Oil Sensor was gave up needed Genuine GM part which was quite costly compared to a generic one.

Thermostat had been replaced with wrong one and was cut to fit which meant it didn't work.

Interior trim is quite flimsy like.

Has a bit of surface rust in a few areas.

Rear wheels off centre and scrape on guard if driving friends around.

General Comments:

Very economical.

Idea car for first car or second family car runabout.

Stock radio good, but when upgrading to after-market CD player most likely need to get it installed as special keys required to remove radio/Cassette.

Just an update. Car has done a few more K's and have recently had to replace the radiator which also discovered that there was a stray currant running through the cooling system. Had to be fixed quickly as was likely radiator would fail. One visit to local Auto electrician resulted in a damaged left hand guard, front bumper and scratches to bonnet from a 4WD Ute reversing into me. Kind of worked in my favour due to rust being cut out of bonnet and resprayed and faded bumper replaced. So looks quite nice now.

1996 Daewoo Cielo 1.5 MPFI SOHC

Summary:

A very average car

Faults:

Seat frame has broken twice.

Several breather hoses & cam cover gaskets replaced.

Radiator fractured requiring replacement after air conditioner pulley flew off (80,000klm).

Camshaft lobe worn off, blown head gasket requiring a very expensive repair (108,000klm).

Water pump (140,000klm).

RHS brake caliper seized twice (120,000 & 200,000klm).

3 speed automatic transmission overhauled (150,000klm). Also expensive.

Radio buttons faulty.

Steering wheel grip has separated from the wire inside, which makes it twist in your hand.

General Comments:

Volvo has the high mileage club. Do I get a prize for getting 200,000klm in a Cielo?

1996 Daewoo Cielo GLX 1.5 petrol

Summary:

Value for money

Faults:

The doors have hinges that are welded - bolted on like most cars. Consequently the most used i.e. the drivers door is misaligned. In any other car, this would be just a simple process of loosening the hinge bolts and realigning the door. This car with its misaligned door will remain as it is, as I cannot see any method to correct it.

The electric window on the drivers side stopped working a few weeks after I got it & the window although fixed, is still problematic.

The positive ventilation valve hose when I got it decomposed.

General Comments:

The car I bought was second hand & cost $5.000. For the money, I could not get any thing else that came close to the Kilometers & age.

For a small car, the interior is roomy, with loads of appointments.

It will run on the smell of an oil rag.

The paintwork and rubber seals are excellent.

It is rock solid on the steering at cruising, although fifth gear is a little sticky to engage.

1996 Daewoo Cielo GL 1.5

Summary:

A gorgeous disguise. A hassle on it's way

Faults:

1. Brakes make a grinding nose when applied.

2. Breather hose needed replacing twice.

3. Transmission gears started slipping.

4. The panels weren't put together very well, doors grinding, hatchback grinding against metal etc.

5. Rear wheels screech.

7. Radio struggles to pick up signal.

8. A lot of vibration in the interior.

9. Seats weren't manufactured correctly, they aren't stable.

10. Rear suspension poor.

11. Brakes need force to apply, doesn't stop quick enough.

General Comments:

This car is not bad for someone who doesn't want to spend much, but doesn't want to be too behind on looks. It looks great and handles O.K. However, I wouldn't buy another one. My version didn't come with power steering which made life worse.

Oil Pump and Main Engine bearing fails 160,000 km's.

General Comments:

This car was the 4 door version of the Daewoo GL.

Generally it ran well and had enough power for most situations.

The build quality of the car I purchased was poor with leaking power steering lines and a manufacuring defect in the driver's seat. Panels were poorly aligned.

This car was purchased just prior to Daewoo introducing the 3 year Freecare program consequently services were paid for and in some cases not performed by a Daewoo dealer.

This car was relatively economical for fuel, but became too expensive due to the extremely high cost of replacement parts.

For example the retail mark up on a genuine Daewoo CV boot compared to the same part provided by an automotive parts chain is in excess of 300%

The quotes to rebuild the engine start at $2700. The Daewoo is heading to the wreckers after 7 years.

Daewoo makes home maintenance difficult by refusing to provide workshop manuals and prohibitive maintenance costs.

Sell the car if you don't like it.you have too many problems with it

I've had pretty much all those problems with my '96 Cielo as well, and it's only done around 85,000km's. Including the water pump and fuel line just recently. The whole exhaust needs to be replaced as well.
