1995 Ford Laser Lynx 1.8i DOHC

Summary:

An excellent fun car

Faults:

CV boots have split on both sides. They are expensive to fix as the drive shaft cannot be removed from the hub due to rust on the splines.

Otherwise, faultless.

General Comments:

This car has a great engine, 123HP @6000 161NM at 4000 flexible and torquey for a 1.8L. Goes hard when revved.

Rear vision is full of blind spots due to the spoiler and the size of the back window.

Easy and fun to drive, light clutch, easy gearshift, light steering.

Fantastic brakes, ABS works well, has already saved me!

Great air con (made for Australia), freezes my face off.

Needs taller gearing or better, a 6th gear. Engine does 3100rpm at 100km/h.

Cheap to run, $7 per 100km in the city (Sydney).

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

A 1995 laser has ABS? I'm amazed.

Well it's time for a update on the Lynx.

AT 126,000km I have had a few more things wrong on it.

1.The left hand CV joint needs replacing, this is from the split boot 30,000km ago

2.100,000km service, leaky water pump so that was replaced.

3.Engine pinging badly, esp when hot and under load, fuel injectors cleaned -seems to have solved problem. (Now living in Queensland, tropical here least 7 months of the year - didn't help pinging)

4. Front brake disc's machined, had a squeal (present since buying car) and a shudder. Both problems gone.

5. Gearbox oil changed, was starting to crunch going into second.

Apart from that, the Laser has been a very reliable car and in light to how it's driven it has done well. All these things seem to be down to wear and tear.

Still have the same tyre's on it from 69,000km. Yes theres still tread on them, longest lasting set of tyre's I have had. Tyres usually only last me 14-15000km!
