1975 Peugeot 504 GL Automatique 2.0

Summary:

First car, treated badly

Faults:

Nothing, believe it or not.

General Comments:

Owned by a catholic priest for many years, it came with an extensive service history.

I bought it as a 16 year old as my first car. It served my wild teenage years.

The 504 endured an accident one Friday night when my friends and I visited Blackhead Quarry in Dunedin to pull donuts. Smashed into a low solid timber fence. Oops. Poor car. Was in the paper for sale next day, but mysteriously didn't sell. Heh heh.

Performance wise, according to the AA, this car "couldn't pull a hen off its nest" yet it never failed to start and never left me stranded. A hardy car worthy of a decent send off. It was unceremoniously traded in on a mega-high-mileage Toyota Corona.

1979 Peugeot 504 GL 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Superb, reliable, classic!

Faults:

Brake master cylinder replaced at 172,000Kms.

Clutch failed at 176,000Kms.

Speakers and radio were replaced, as they were not working well when I bought the car.

Radiator cracked and leaked at around 178,000Kms.

General Comments:

This is a superb car, from the moment you sit in it you can tell that it is built with quality.

Handles beautifully, although there is quite a bit of body-roll.

Engine is strong and reliable. Little maintenance required.

There is little in the way of acceleration or speed (the 504 is equipped with a 4-speed transmission), however there is plenty of torque; almost enough to start in 3-rd gear.

The seats are amazingly comfortable!

1980 Peugeot 504 GLD 2.3 diesel

Summary:

Would probably last for ever if looked after properly

Faults:

The rear brakes seized, and I had to drive home with the brakes on!

There was a major oil-leak from the gearbox, which became more apparent after it's first service, when it dumped half a liter of gearbox oil in the driveway.

The radiator was blocked causing overheating; this blockage was caused by the previous owner removing the thermostat and causing a loss of pressure in the radiator.

The head gasket blew in spectacular fashion in the middle of Sydney, I almost made it home, with steam pouring from the exhaust, but I decided to stop in case I did more damage. The repair bill was $2,800...it would have been cheaper to leave the car at the side of the road and walk away!!

General Comments:

Undoubtedly the most comfortable car I have ever driven, but it was past it's prime when I got it, not helped by sub-standard repairs by previous owners.

Comfy seats were very handy when waiting for the breakdown truck!

It was eventually sold to a gentleman who exported old Peugeot 504s and parts to 3rd world countries to use as taxicabs.

1982 Peugeot 504 GL 2.0 petrol

Summary:

The number of these still on the road is testimony to how good these cars are

Faults:

There were very few things that went wrong with this car.

It first arrived in my family as my sisters first car. It's fair to say that it wasn't treated too well, hardly ever being serviced and being run into the ground. It received a new transmission, before I owned it, from being constantly thrown into drive before the car came to a standstill after being driven in reverse.

Carby jets became blocked a few times, which is a simple job to fix within ten minutes.

Brake light switch under front pedal died. purchased a new one for $19.00 and installed myself. (The Peugeot dealer wanted to charge me $90.00 to have it fitted, saying that it needed special adjustment. I said no thanks, it's a light switch, it's either on or off.)

Rear brake caliper failed, resulting in complete loss of brakes. Had the whole lot replaced, discs machined and master cylinder overhauled. app. $500.00.

Accelerator cable snapped in the middle of nowhere. Tow to nearest town, cable and fitting, $100.00.

Ignition barrel jammed, couldn't start the car. Had a new one fitted for about $80.00.

General Comments:

This was my first car and I can't be thankful enough.

It was bullet proof.

No matter what I threw at it, it just kept delivering. Even during the harshest rally driving expeditions.

Peugeot's are famous for their handling and the 504 is no exception. The IRS setup is amazing and keeps the car stuck to the road like glue.

Although the car was a little heavy and boat like, it handled just fine, a lot better than many new cars straight off the showroom floor.

Performance is adequate. It's by no means mind blowing, but the beefy old Pug with the 2.0 petrol carby had enough get up and go to keep up and out perform most traffic. Off road was a different story all together. Peugeot's and dirt go together like peaches and cream, or pigs and mud... You get the idea. This model did win countless rally events.

The interior was well laid out, spacious and very practical. Although the horn on the indicator lever took some getting used to.

The seats, as I have discovered with most Peugeot's, were the most comfortable seats of any car I have owned.

I wish I still had it!

I like the 504. We had one in Uganda, and took it to a rally. It's the ultimate machine; better than the new car. Well done Peugeot 504; I love you.

82 504S, stick. Best car I've ever owned by far. Well over 100,00 with almost no service. Well laid out interior, fabulous seats, very comfortable. If a new one was available I would snap it up.
