1977 Peugeot 504 GL 2.0L petrol

Summary:

Good ones are worth twice their monetary value

Faults:

General wear and tear after this sort of mileage. Water pump dissolved after 300,000 and embedded the welsh plug in the impeller blades. Still ran well though and cooled properly!

Usual starter and alternator rebuilds done by me.

Head service done at 300,000km.

Gear box starting to leak at the rear seal like they all do.

Strong as an ox. Built like a tank in the front end.

General Comments:

Slowish in today's traffic yet I never get speeding tickets.

Awesome suspension travel - better than a Toyota Hilux.

Excellent bucket seats. Never been in a more comfortable seat including Benz's and latest luxury Euro cars.

I'm waiting for it to wear out, if ever.

My father bought Peugeot 504 when I was 4, and now I am 25 and he still uses this car. I agree with the the comfort mark, 10 out of 10.

I had a two previous owner 1976 504 station waggon. I consider it to be the best cars I have owned. Excellent ground clearance, handling, brakes, seats, headlights, load carrying capacity, reliability (nothing failed) and ride. Its replacement, a BMW, had no personality.

Outstanding car.

This is truly an outstanding automobile! The ‘76 Peugeot 504 with four wheel disc brakes, buckets seats with a “Sealy posturepedic” feel that reclines into a bed, so you can rest. Refrigerator white, with a sunroof, a head-turner on any continent and rides so smooth it's unbelievable. This car will probably outlast me, the one I own happens to be the same year I was born! No my Peugeot is not for sale, It's a classic.

True! Especially the rear seats, they were the most comfortable I ever sat on.

The only car I ever rode in that was better than my 504 was a W126 Mercedes. That's how good it was.

I have had 3 504s . The first in Malaysia in the 70s, where my plantation company employers ran it as the only car managers were permitted to have. What a sensible decision that was. Tough, comfortable and utterly reliable on those rough laterite estate roads; a car you could trust. Nearly every Kuala Lumpur taxi was a 404 or a 504 for the same excellent reasons. Transferred to Canada, I ran one there, where it coped well with the snow and ice, and final one in London; this last one somehow less sturdy feeling and more plasticky inside. But all 3 were satisfying, sturdy and a bit like a very good friend who would never let you down. And enough room in the back to hold a party!
