2003 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.6

Summary:

Poorly manufactured and appalling build quality for the price

Faults:

Transmission noise at 7000kms.

RMS (rear main seal) leak at 16000kms.

Interior falling apart and of poor quality.

General Comments:

I've always loved Porsche, but since having bought it, I'm starting to have grave concerns, especially when the warranty runs out!

The built quality is not what I had expected from a car in this price range. The problems with the RMS and transmission are really worrying me, although they were eventually repaired under warranty (dealer support sucks). I'm worried if this happens again, I'll be up for mega bucks $$$$ to fix.

I hear on various forum that the 996 and 997 911's suffer from all these type of problems. This was not the experience I was hoping for. I'm now sadly selling this car.

Deteriorating build quality has been affecting many of the mainstream German marques (VW, Audi, BMW) for some time, but I am shocked it has filtered through to Porsche.

I would be gutted had I spent that sort of money on a car and had even trivial problems with it.

The GS300 has gone to the wife and YES I'm selling the 911 even though I've been informed I stand to lose around $70,000 AUD. I have enjoyed driving the car immensely, but don't want to be stuck with any future problems, once the warranty expires. Associates of mine own or have owned the older 911's mid 80's vintage with high KMS and suffer very few problems. Although I've always loved Porsche, it seems the company philosophy has changed.

1981 Porsche 911 SC 3.0 litre

Summary:

Art

Faults:

Rear brake caliper sticking.

High/low beam not working.

Radio/cassette not working.

Minor little problems.

General Comments:

This is my first rear engined car, it sticks to the road incredibly well.

It is very quick, give the feeling of a 767 at take off roll.

I say 767 as the thrust is stronger than a 747.

It is an event when I start it every 2 or so weeks, I just sit there and let it come to life, slowly so all parts are well lubricated before setting off.

Ah is there any other car that gives the same emotion?... no!

1967 Porsche 911 L 2.0

Summary:

Affordable Classic

Faults:

Front ball joints and tie rod ends needed replacing for a cost of 1000.

Camshafts needed rebuild at a cost of 3500.

Rust spot on back window seal.

General Comments:

This car is a classic so you have to be prepared to spend money to keep it running.

The car has 130bhp which which will push it along since it only weighs 1090kg, and really starts to come into its own in 3rd gear. So you get great acceleration from 40-140km..

But in general, the 63-69 were the first generation 911, so although you get the classic look, you also get the teething problems.

Camshaft chain tensioners are prone to fail.

My recommendation is to buy the 69-73 model, which has the same exterior which is what is so appealing about this car, but had the updated 2.2,2.4 litre motor, which has updated camshafts and gearbox, in addition the interior is more modern with demister and a proper heater...

1989 Porsche 911 930 Turbo Cabriolet 3.4 litre 6 cylinder turbo

Summary:

Absolutely awesome

Faults:

Rear view mirror falls off.

Battery dies very quickly.

Problems with ignition switch.

General Comments:

Insanely fast.

Great for cruising.

Good for track work if it had a roll bar!

As per usual very cramped inside, but a quick squirt of the accelerator and you don't care.

Requires PULP.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 3.2

Summary:

Fantastic car, truly magnificent driving experience

Faults:

Air conditioner fan motor burnt out. Spring Plates worn. Worn Shocks.

General Comments:

Standard suspension far too soft for hard driving. Recommended mod of fitting 23 mm front and 31 mm rear torsion bars. Koni shocks and strut brace have transformed the handling. The car lacks torque below 4500 RPM, but is a nice camming motor when in the power band. The G50 gearbox is probably the best in any road going car. Very slick and very bullet proof, although a little noisy.
