1998 Toyota Camry Vienta Grande (XLE) 3.0 V6

Summary:

Smooth reliable well made car

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

A fantastic, reliable, smooth, comfortable, quiet car.

The V6 power plant is so smooth/sophisticated.

My car now has 260000 ks on it without a rattle or squeak anywhere, and the paintwork is still like new, other than the odd scratch here and there.

The interior trim almost perfect with the exception of some leather fade.

I recently drove a 2006 Holden Commodore Omega, and once I got back in my Camry, it felt so much smoother. I believe this car is still streets ahead of what Australian made Falcon and Commodore offer.

I own a Camry and agree; I drove a Falcon and it seems a lot less refined. But I have to mention that the Camry/Vienta is Australian made.

1998 Toyota Camry CSI 4 Cylinder

Summary:

Underrated

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This is one of the milestone Camry models Toyota has produced. Excellent ride and build quality, handling and reliability. Though if you're looking for a stylish or sporty car, this probably isn't where to look.

Earlier this year, my previous car was a 2000 Holden Astra. It had all the features you'd want with European styling, yet being previously associated with the Toyota badge, it was all to no avail. It was perhaps my grandparents who influenced my Toyota passion. They had owned numerous Toyota's throughout their lives, and had proven that a Toyota will last the distance, and even beyond.

Their most recent car was the 1999 Toyota Camry Conquest. Its features included front power windows, cruise control, front SRS air bags, ABS breaks and a nice 3.0L V6 engine. As well as the standard fitments such as remote central locking and power door mirrors.

It was in this very car that I learnt how to drive, and that's when I truly started to appreciate what a good car it was. Although it spoilt me. I'd get into other cars expecting them to drive the same only to be disappointed. And that is perhaps why I chose to trade-in for a Camry.

The Camry I got is a 1998 2.2L 4 cylinder CSI, the same body shape, and overall the same car except less features. On the test drive I could have sworn I was driving a V6, but to my surprise, it was a humble 4 cylinder. The 'styling' was typical of all Camry's, but I wasn't really looking for a car that demanded attention, I was more interested in something that drove well. And that's basically what the Camry is, a practical, good quality and very reliable car.

So basically, I'm happy! Anyone who says this car is rubbish or not very good, has either not driven one or has had a particularly bad day! :-)

A Camry Crime Scene Investigation? Any good? Wheelies?

1998 Toyota Camry Vienta Grande 3.0 V6

Summary:

A really excellent car, overall; my best friend, apart from my dog

Faults:

Both rear power windows failed just outside warranty, about 2 months apart. Quite expensive to replace.

General Comments:

In general, a great car. Utterly reliable, whisper quiet in cruise and surprisingly economical on fuel. Great engine; turbine smooth and revs beautifully. Extremely well put together; still not a solitary rattle 7 years after assembly.

Not the quickest off the mark, but can get up and scamper if really wound up. Handles well overall, very safe, albeit maybe a bit stodgy and not very exciting or nimble on winding/hilly roads.

Internally, the front seats are the car's worst feature by far; the only really bad feature at all, in fact. Although leather and quite robust, they are very poorly shaped in the seat pan, being almost flat and quite hard. Really quite uncomfortable on even medium drives, with no lateral support at all. Very poor indeed for an upmarket model.

I have a white 1999 Vienta VXI, my third Camry and second Vienta. I purchased the vehicle from a dealer in Queensland with 15256 k's from new. Yes I thought it was a misprint too, but it was genuine, so I purchased the car and had it trucked to Melbourne at a cost of $800. To re-register in Victoria cost me $1100, and the Vienta cost me $11,200; new they were over $40,000 drive away, and it was like new.

The Vienta is so quiet and smooth, and with the quad cam V6 has plenty of performance. The transmission and engine are superb, build quality excellent, this car was exported to something like 27 markets overseas.

I have fitted lambs wool seat covers and that has made a difference to the comfort of the front seats. My partner has a 2002 Camry Advantage 2.2 four cylinder with 65,000ks from new.

I am looking a buying a Vienta Grande as well. The reason you see so many of these Camry's on the road is because they are a well built reliable vehicle, highly recommended.
