2000 Toyota Corolla Ascent 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Sadly our last

Faults:

A fairly loud rattle would occur from the suspension at the front left side. Numerous calls to Toyota with promises of been called back, 4 years and 2 more cars later, no one called. Toyota even knew about it. Other than that the car was excellent, if it wasn't for the annoying rattle the car would still be owned, we just had to get rid of it.

General Comments:

We've owned 4 Toyota's in a row and this is our last, after being treated like they didn't care Toyota has lost our business (not that they'll notice it in sales)

The car performed well, it could take to the hill's in 5th gear and could do 120kmh with ease.

Never got to notice how the car steered, the noise was fairly distracting.

It's a pity that you had this experience. Toyota Corolla's have been generally good in my experience. As for the company not contacting you, this type of customer service seems to be the norm rather than the exception with pretty much all car companies. Once they have your money they really don't care.

I wrote the original review, yes I still browse this site, but I do agree that, Corolla's and other Toyota's are in fact generally reliable vehicles and this particular example, not that it was unreliable, but just that problem and lack of care from the company was disappointing. My 3 previous cars consisted of 2 Camry's and a Corolla and they were excellent and after this 2000 Corolla went on to purchase a 02 Laser, but couldn't stay away from Toyota, purchasing an 04 Rav4 (we update cars regularly) which was perfect. Other Toyota's that have been in the family or still are include, 82 Corolla (owned for 16 years, 83 Tarago, 85 Land Cruiser, 02 Land Cruiser, 91 Camry, 95 Camry, 97 Corolla, 97 Camry, 04 Rav4, 92 Cressida and a Coaster bus, so ultimately the 00 Corolla was only 1 Toyota with a problem out of numerous perfect examples.

2000 Toyota Corolla Conquest 1.8 7A-FE

Summary:

Let's hope my new '05 corolla is better

Faults:

Rattles galore.

Console storage compartment lid broke Jan'04.

Dashboard warped.

Trim discoloured badly.

General Comments:

Performance is, well, adequate. It is fine around town, but in the hilly country you certainly need to put your boot down. It can keep up with traffic, but that is all.

Ride is crashy.

Handling is reasonably nimble, it is quite chuck-able.

Great colour and styling, but...

Liftback styling meant poor rear seat space, paint is difficult to match up for chips and scratches.

What does "crashy" and "chuck-able" mean? Local slang is fun, but not helpful to a wider audience.

Translation from Australian Slang:

Chuckable = good handling.

Crashy = Suspension bottoms out/or harsh.

2000 Toyota Corolla Ascent 1.8L

Summary:

Excellent reliable car for a good price

Faults:

Tape player is temperamental, and wheel alignment was a bit troublesome, but no big issues.

General Comments:

This is a fantastic little car. Very responsive at the lower speed ranges, strains a bit more at the higher speeds if going up hills, but still performs beautifully - totally hoonable, which was unexpected.

Interior finish is a bit plasticky, especially compared to more European styled models such as the Holden Astra (main competitor in this range I believe), but it beats the pants off the Astra in reliability.

Fuel efficiency is good - particularly with premium petrol.

Downsides - hatchback boot takes a fair slam to catch properly. Fuel gage is not very accurate. Ride can be a little bumpy, but I guess normal for a smallish car.

2000 Toyota Corolla Ascent 1.8

Summary:

The best car in the world?

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with this car.

General Comments:

This is our family's third car. We also have a high performance sports car and a luxury car as well. But guess what? The Corolla as boring as it seems is the best of the lot! It has great build quality. It reliably gets you from A to B in quiet calm and refinement. The late model "luxury car" we own is (gasp!) noisier and spends way too much time in the garage!. The Corolla's performance is enough to get you easily booked for speeding yet it does not attract attention to itself like the performance car. It also rides better and seats a family of five. The Corolla is far more economical than the other two vehicles and doesn't demand special PULP fuel. You can park it into spaces which the luxury car can only dream about without worrying about vandals or the occasional parking dingle. Our previous everyday car (Daihatsu) had some similar qualities, but was way too tinny to compare. The Corolla must clearly be the best car in the world. Perhaps we should sell the other two cars?

Yes. STILL the best car in the world!

For all the reasons you state.

Very easy to maintain also, except for the occasional timing belt change, which I don't do myself.

If you're referring to the 2000 Corolla on review, it doesn't use a timing belt. Corolla engines started using chains from 1998 and beyond.
