1994 Acura Integra LS coupe 4 cylinder

Summary:

Ultimate high performance bargain

Faults:

When I first got the car, the dealer could not fix the engine temperature problem. Every time I go downhill on a highway, the engine temperature goes towards the red zone. On surface street, it was fine, even if I had the A/C on. When I finally took it to my personal mechanic, he said that someone had installed the thermostat in the reverse position, he immediately replaced it with a new one in the correct position, and the problem is gone ever since. I have driven the car in the desert on hot summer days with A/C after the repair, the engine temperature never when beyond normal.

General Comments:

Car handles great. I have upgraded to a set of lighter 15 inch custom wheels with 195/55 R15 tires, it rides / turns great. I had the car up to its top speed of 135mph on track, it glues to the ground. It is the ultimate sports car if you are shopping on a budget. It even fits two bikes inside the car, the rear seats folds down. If you are buying a used one, make sure to ask the mechanic to replace all the belts and hoses, so you won't have to worry about it for many years to come.

1994 Acura Integra LS 1.8 I4

Summary:

A great car, but a little fragile here and there..

Faults:

72000 miles: I had brakes replaced, front and back: $400.

80000 miles: Dented rear quarter panel with my rear while leaning on the car. I weigh 150 lbs.

85000 miles: New timing belt, tuning and water pump, and additional brake work: $750.

93000 miles: With vehicle five years old, I replaced the factory plastic radiator with aftermarket metal part. Estimate by a shop was $450+. Cost for an OEM (Nippendenso) radiator with plastic parts was $200+. The metal aftermarket cost around $120.

105000: ABS system failure. The Accumulator (a part that never fails) failed. Modulator (I think it feeds into the accumulator) also bad. Factory replacement parts cost over $950. Total repair cost $1350. I've heard from another Integra owner who had the same problem. He investigated a junkyard part, but heard that reliability was a problem and labor cost too high to justify the risk.

72000-115000 miles: Occasional soft shift from 2nd to third. Could be going soon...

115000: Brakes due for more work. I will learn how to do them myself.

General Comments:

Good points:

Super handling and decent performance.

Excellent mileage: Once got 37mpg for an entire tank with a full load and the AC running.

Super cargo handling: the hatchback holds more than most full-sized car trunks.

Good reliability: I think the motor will last forever and the transmission has performed acceptably, given its age, mileage, and stop-and-go traffic.

Bad points:

Road noise, thin sheet metal, braking system.

My worst gripe is the plastic radiator. One would think Honda would realize heat, cold, and vibration are good ways to crack plastic.

1994 Acura Integra LS

Summary:

If you like fun, fast, reliable cars it's for you!

Faults:

The radiator cracked at 80,000.

The battery has gone dead twice, but this was in the extreme Texas heat.

General Comments:

I have only had the above three problems with the car in 7 years of ownership. It's fun to take on curvy roads and it still has "zip" after all these years and miles. It's the best car I've ever owned, the dealership treats me fairly and honestly (I barely have had to see them), and I will most likely buy another Acura when the time comes. I expect to drive this car until it dies, and that might be a while.
