I love this car, it is truly a unique car
Wiring problems in 1998.
This car was a perfect combination of performance, handling, and practicality. The 401 V8 was installed by me soon after purchase, and made this a real power house.
The car had some under steer when new, but a change of sway bars and some weight reduction in the front end, solved that.

I've driven a few muscle cars before and nothing compares to my AMX. My first car was a 400 4 speed Trans Am, while that car was fun it doesn't hold a candle to the AMX.
It has the most interior room of any two seat car I've ever seen. The dash layout is something like you would see in a race car.
I seriously recommend owning one. though they are hard to find in good condition they are very reliable cars. I bought mine after it had sat for 3 years untouched. Changed the oil and tires and drove it 1500 miles cross country with out a single problem!

A fun performance machine that attracts attention
The torque converter is currently out, but since the factory trans in '73 was an outsourced Chrysler 727, parts are easy to get. This is, after all, the same transmition Chrysler put behind the Hemi enginges.
The original vinyl top needs replaced (it is older than I am) and the car needs repainted (still has original paint)
AMC's are the muscle car bargain. They're cheaper to buy than many of the cars from the big three and AMC's engines are pretty bullet proof. Mine is all original with the "GO" package. The performance from the cowl inducted 360 is great. The car has never refused to start and is a blast to drive. People pay a lot of attention to this car when you drive by because it isn't the typical Mustang or Camaro.

I have the same car, and I couldn't agree more!
In the fall of '72' I ordered a 73 AMX with 'Go Package' and had a great deal of fun with the car. One of the first things I did was disconnect all that pollution mumbo jumbo and replaced the factory Rochester Carb with an 850 dual pump Holly with mechanical secondaries. What a difference that made, even with the automatic trans. I drove it for about 3 years, putting on about 70,000 miles. and then our first son arrived and that was the end of the AMX. No room for baby seats and all that goes with them. I then moved up to a '75' Jeep Cherokee 'S' with a 360 and that 4 speed Borg Warner rock crusher trans. Not very fast, but would pull anything and go anywhere. Many other cars have come and gone over the years, but I wish I still had that AMX. Ain't hindsight wonderful.

I owned a 1969 AMC AMX 390 GO-Pac, 4spd Hurst, fully equipped, Matador Red w white over the top Go-Pac stipes. The interior was dark grey leather, but I forget the console AMX#. It was unusual in that it had tilt steering. My father's company was a vendor for AMC and he arranged for me to purchase an executive demo. It had 5,300 miles on it when we picked it up at headquarters. It was either that or a 390 SCRAMBLER.
What a great car. I really wish I still had it. I was 20 yrs old when I bought it. Now I'm 60. I'll never forget my AMX.
