1998 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8 litre

Summary:

Good car, but the newer ones have a better reliability rating

Faults:

I purchased the 1998 Audi A4 Quattro in Phoenix, AZ. in 2004 and imported it into Canada. It had 103,000 miles at the time of purchase, and was in mint condition.

107,000 miles - replaced timing chain, tensioners, thermostat and water pump (no problem... I just didn't know when they had been changed last)

109,300 miles - replaced secondary air pump relay after it shorted out, causing the fan to keep running after the car was turned off. This would cause the battery to discharge.

120,590 miles - replaced leaky power steering hoses and split front CV boots;

127,700 miles - replaced all four wheel bearings (one was starting to make noise so I did all 4)

140,670 miles - replaced both front brake calipers after they started leaking (did this along with full brake service)

General Comments:

The car handles very well and is very stable at high speeds. The leather interior that still looks in mint condition after 11 years. It is definitely the most comfortable car I've ever owned.

The expenses to date have been acceptable, since I have stayed away from the Audi dealers for repairs.

1998 Audi A4 Base 2.8 30V V6 petrol

Summary:

For some reason, any replacement on a A4 costs $1000

Faults:

Starter gone when bought, replaced at 85,000 miles.

Timing belt started slipping at 90,000, and replaced at 100,000.

Clutch went out and replaced at 115,000.

Power steering leak fixed at 125,000.

Water pump, thermostat, coolant overflow tank, and lower radiator hose needed replaced at 140,000.

Both front brake lines ruptured and needed replaced at 165,000.

Front ball joints, front driver seat, taillights & headlights, all need replaced now from normal wear at 185,000.

General Comments:

This is the only car I have said "I Love You" to everyday we are together.

This is the fastest 190HP you can find in a car.

The front suspension is well thought out, and you can feel their intentions on the four-link transverse mounted drive train.

I only feel this assured in a turn I thought in a RWDer.

Eats up miles on a long trip without ever being over worked.

1998 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8

Summary:

Car from the DEVIL!!!

Faults:

New engine after purchase; $4500, and $3300 to install.

New clutch installed is $1300.

Check engine light always on.

Oil leakage 2 quarts per week.

General Comments:

This car looks great, but is a total nightmare. Every mechanic I have spoken with says Audi is garbage and some mechanics wouldn't work on the car.

The car was checked by my mechanic and there were no problems, but two days later the engine threw a rod. There was no heads up for this one. One day the car will run great, and the next day it will crap on you.

1998 Audi A4 2.8 Lts

Summary:

It's a miserable car

Faults:

This car is a maintenance nightmare. First my front axle broke and then when I got it fixed the rear axle broke. After that I had a slew of minor problems including electrical failure, oil leaks etc etc. Now finally my transmission is gone! The dealer is asking for $6K to fix the transmission (its more than what I bought the car for). This car is going to the scrapyard.

General Comments:

This car is really amazing when running. But the problem is it lies more often in the mechanic shop than the parking lot.

I will never ever buy an Audi in my life again.
