1988 BMW 3 Series 325is 2.5 liter inline 6

Summary:

Turn heads for only a few thousand dollars!

Faults:

Back light in computer has gone out, "light check" button on ceiling panel has popped out, is now a spring, but is still usable. minor wear/cuts on seats, nothing major. clutch hydraulics went out at 160,000 miles. a/c is no longer working. (all of this was under my fathers ownership from 1992-2003)

General Comments:

A great car to learn manual driving on. I learned how to drive this 5 speed in 3 days of driving, and it has driven incredibly nice since it was given to me. It is a great car for me, being 16. It could, however, be incredibly dangerous under the driving of an irresponsible person. The seat, and the car sits incredibly low, you don't sit in a car... you sit in a cockpit! It still drives beautifully even with 170000 miles on it. The car also gets great gas mileage, which is one of the reasons I wanted it so badly to start with.

What is the gas mileage you get roughly?

Incredibly dangerous to drive? Hmm. In what way? I've owned a BMW for 9 years - and only find you need "good or excellent tires" and good driving skills. If driving in the snow/ice without snow tires, yes it can be dangerous, as any rear-wheel drive car can be.

1988 BMW 3 Series 325 2.7 super ETA

Summary:

Great handling, timeless design, however pricey upkeep

Faults:

Mass air sensor failed causing car to stall when it was given gas. New sensor cost $200.

Exhaust straps all corroded through. New part coat $50 without labor.

Thermometer works sporadically.

Power locks have ceased functioning in drivers side door.

Brake lining light comes on due to wire wearing through.

Sunroof needs extra help closing sometimes.

General Comments:

Car handles very well in good condition. Would not recommend a slush-box (transmission) to anyone interested in performance. Anyone driving this car in the winter needs to be wary, can be rather tricky, snow tires are a must. Cost of parts demonstrates some clear price gouging. Car is styled in a manner that is timeless.

1988 BMW 3 Series 325ic 1.68

Summary:

This car is a reason to drive!

Faults:

Any repairs will be quite expensive.

Although the air conditioner is in working order, the car will overheat if the air conditioner is used in hot weather. Also, the car will overheat while sitting idle for a long period (i.e. drive-through line). It does not perform well in any type of precipitation.

General Comments:

I love this car! It handles like a dream and is especially fun for long-distance trips.

The features available in this car are truly amazing. Even buying it at 12 years of age, the computer still works beautifully.

Has a ton of get-up-and-go! Sometimes this can be a problem as I've had several tickets in my two years of ownership.

My BMW has the most comfortable seats, with many adjustment levels. They are in mint condition. The leather has worn exceptionally well.

Although the car was purchased through an extremely unethical dealer, and there was no way to contact a previous owner, it has been very reliable. The only maintenance it receives now is a regular oil change every 3,000 miles.

This convertible has the nicest top compartment. Although mine is a manual top, I am able to put the top up or down alone with no problem.

This car combines beauty, performance and luxury - a reason to truly love a car.

1988 BMW 3 Series 325i 2.5L gasoline

Summary:

Not your white trash American car from the 80's!!!

Faults:

Nothing is really wrong with the car. You can tell just by driving it that BMW made these cars to last.

The idle is a little unstable, possibly due to throttle position sensor needing adjusting or the idle sensor needing to be replaced.

General Comments:

I LOVE this car. I have owned a 1987 Camaro (white trash car) that was a piece of crap, a Ford Bronco (offroading white trash car), a 1983 Mazda RX-7 (pretty cool car) and a 1969 VW Bug (still have it, but looking to sell the tin can on wheels).

No other car I have ever owned or driven has the acceleration, handling or comfort of the 325. I don't care what anybody says, if you want to get a car that isn't going to spend most of it's time at the shop and that IS actually fun to drive, this car has it.

The old lady I bought this from (for $2000.00) didn't know what she had on her hands. It has all the options (of the time) along with leather interior (still in great shape), a convertible top (that seems like it is brand new) and the original paint that looks like it has just rolled off the assembly line. Even the engine compartment looks brand new.

Bottom line is that this model of car is a driver's dream. Front to back and side to side; more attention to detail went into making this car than nearly anything on the road!

How does the rx7 compare to this car in performance?

I was just wondering why you would not purchase another BMW, when all of your comments and ratings of this auto made it sound awesome? Sounds like you love this car. Why wouldn't you want another?

My 88 Crown Vic has taken a beating from me for 10 years already. And only thing it needed was a water pump.

White trash? Yeah, 'cause nothing says 'class' like a 20-year old, low-end Beemer hoopty. The choice of college kid poseurs everywhere.

Driving an 80's BMW in this day and age is almost more white trash than the Camaro, it's pretentious and cheesy.
