1998 Cadillac Eldorado Touring Coupe 4.6 V8

Summary:

Love it and my baby is back home!!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Back in 1998, I bought the same one that I've got now brand new at Faulkner Cadillac in Trevose Pennsylvania. Had it for 5 years and put 93000 miles on it. I got rid of it because of my job issues. I missed the car. Got a much better job and desperately wanted the twin of what I had back in 1998. It was black outside and inside. Went online to desperately find a twin of it. This was June 13th of 2015. Lo and behold, there were 4 black on black ones. The one I have now was located in Kingston New York and had 70000 miles. It was owned by a 92 year old Italian lady who just went into a nursing home and stopped driving. Called the son up and arrangements were made for me to go and see it. He was asking $7500, so I wrote a check and back to Philadelphia Pennsylvania the car went. Had new inspection and all fluids replaced. The lady had put new tires on it. I got my baby back and love it. She drives beautifully and gets compliments all the time. She'll be my baby forever!

1998 Cadillac Eldorado ETC Northstar

Summary:

A grand slam home run by GM

Faults:

Head gasket problem at 147000.

Motor mounts.

Power trunk actuator.

General Comments:

I love this Cadillac Eldorado ETC 1998.

Incredible looks and style, super fast and smooth ride.

Plus gorgeous leather seating and a killer BOSE stereo system.

The quality materials used in the entire vehicle, along with the beautiful Crimson Pearl "Red" paint job, make this a home run by GM.

I tell people every day, when they compliment me on how sharp the car is, go buy one now, before the world realizes what this car is.

In 20 years it will be a show car. They are cheap to buy now. So go!!

You will drive many extra miles before you park each time!!

1998 Cadillac Eldorado ETC North Star

Summary:

If it wasn't for the inherent flaw in the North Star engine, I'd say it's a good, over priced GM car

Faults:

Real seal leak at 80000 miles.

Lower case half leak at 80000 miles.

General Comments:

The north star engine has an inherent flaw in its lower case half gasket. With its aluminum engine and cast iron crankshaft, engine twisting routs out the rear seal. It only gets worse with time. The transverse mounted aluminum engine twists and gives, the cast iron crankshaft doesn't, causing the routing of the rear seal. Oh yes it cost 4,000.00 to fix at dealer.

If you are interested in buying a used Cadillac, check the rear seal first, if it's not leaking it will be one of the few.

1998 Cadillac Eldorado 4.6L Northstar

Summary:

Better than those lousy Japanese cars I've had

Faults:

Brake rotors developed "lot rot" rust pattern from sitting.

Oil pressure sending unit began leaking, possibly my fault since I know I put the wrong oil in it once.

Fuel level sending unit went bad.

General Comments:

To the GM Master Mechanic: You must be right. I bought my car from a lease return specialist and promptly had the cooling system flushed out at the local CADILLAC dealership. They said they used Dexcool. From other comments I've read on this site, that was a really smart move. I've tromped the pedal to the floor in this car lots of times and never had a problem with the head gaskets going bad. I think the Northstar is one of the best things GM has ever done.

This car is my 7th Cadillac and I have no regrets purchasing it. I'd probably buy another if the newer ones weren't all so hideously ugly. Maybe I should look for another used Eldorado that's been dealer-serviced all its life.

The dealer nearest me has never charged what I thought was an excessive amount for any repair, and the fleet vehicles where I work -- Jeeps and Ford cars and SUV's -- were just as expensive to repair and maintain, with many more reliability problems than my Cadillac.

I've always had better results from a Cadillac than anything else, and they were all used cars when I bought them.
