1989 Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport

Summary:

A true surprise. A real performer

Faults:

Not much has gone wrong with this car. I was a Ford man myself until I met my wife who owned this wagon with 223,000km on it. I thought for sure it was going to pack it in in a few years; Boy, was I wrong.

Parts are generally cheap and can be done by non-dealership mechanics.

Major things that I've replaced over the years include: alternators, water pumps, computer chip and a head gasket leak - the gasket was the biggest repair at 271,000 km. The GM paint job is a maroon 'sandpaper' finish.

The driver's door has fallen off and a few buttons are starting to fall apart. The left signal arm must be turned off manually. The turn signals blink about once every 4 seconds! But the radio still works!!

Other than that, the usual wear and tear: tires, brakes, belts, fuses, etc.

General Comments:

This car is fast, even for its age. Our teenage daughter, unbeknownst to us, 'dragged' this car with her dingbat boyfriend at local intersections after she acquired her driver's license.

Now our 21-year old son drives it locally only. Not suitable for highway driving anymore.

If only they built Chevy's like this nowadays! I don't care about the styling, actually. I would buy another one like this in a heartbeat!

1989 Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport

Summary:

Very reliable, good performance, comparable to Japanese for dependability

Faults:

Nothing mechanical. In over 2 yrs, only replaced belt and brakes. Seat belts don't retract, temp gauge not working.

General Comments:

This is a very reliable car.

It does get a bit shakey when going past 70.

1989 Chevrolet Celebrity 4dr sedan 2.8 V6

Summary:

I wish todays cars were as reliable as this one. Very dependable as most 80's Chevys are

Faults:

It was wrecked and salvaged, whoever fixed it did a worthless job, I had to put it in shop before I could drive it to replace the front drivers side spindle and have it aligned.

Then it wouldn't start, so I towed it to another shop just to find out it was spark plugs, so I did a full tune up on it.

Had a bubble form in a tire, so I replaced all 4 tires.

Started overheating, replaced thermostat, flushed radiator, replaced temp sensor, fan motor, then finally just wired up a toggle switch directly to fan.

Trunk lid rusting out, leaks, I covered it with duct tape (well it works...)

General Comments:

Very very good car, runs and drives great, goes over 450 miles on a tank of gas on the highway.

It's comfy and very fast.

The A.C. doesn't work, but hey it's pretty old...

Once I got the proper maintenance done, that had been neglected, not one problem.

Probably won't ever get rid of it, it will always be there to back me up.

See if you have freon in your A/C.. if so, don't bother, if not, try a 134A retrofit.

1989 Chevrolet Celebrity cl 2.8V6

Summary:

Chevrolet dependability at the right price!

Faults:

I purchased the vehicle from an individual for 250.00. Being 18 years old, the seats are worn, the back seat is tearing away from its mounts, but all of those things are typical for a vehicle 18 years old. Personally, I've not had any trouble with it.

General Comments:

It looks like a box.

1989 Chevrolet Celebrity 2.8 Litre

Summary:

My 'Pocket Rocket', a great vehicle for the market price when well maintained

Faults:

The alternator went at about 150,000k.

The body computer failed about ten years ago. (replaced)

The window seals in the front rotted out. (replaced them last year - cheap!)

The cruise control quit when the switch on the multi-function lever failed. (Replaced)

The wiper circuit board needs replacement. Sometimes the wipers won't delay and sometimes the won't shut off. They still operate OK 80 percent of the time so I am putting it off.

A vacuum tee broke, causing HVAC flow and cruise control concerns (Replaced)

The glass halogen headlight housings keep cracking! (three replaced so far, one on the car is currently cracked; arg)

Rust is slowly creeping up! Cleaned up and repainted about 4 years ago, but once a Saskatchewan car, always a Saskatchewan car. Reappearing around carriage windows and bottom of doors, but I figure based on its speed so far that it will be at least 3 years before it gets too far. It didn't help that the original paint job 'fell off' about 4 years after it left the dealer.

The 4 speed overdrive 440 transmission is starting to slip, but I have no problem putting a re-manufactured transmission in this car. It owes me nothing and the engine is strong.

The most frustrating thing I have encountered is the horn pad. I have replaced it 3 times and it works for awhile, then someone cuts me off and It doesn't work! (Arg)

General Comments:

I love this car, its been a super car and keeps on going. Its been in my family since new, bought in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Every option it came off the assembly line with still works, including the a/c!

The 2.8 litre V6 is a great engine. I commute 65 km everyday on the highway. Throttle response is always great. I can set the cruise at 100-120 KM/H, get great gas mileage and if I feel the need, I can tip in the throttle and watch most other cars disappear. (Except of course the Crown Victoria's with the flashing lights)

Regular service! Always doing oil changes every 5000 km and following the GM service table really paid off.

At 315,000 km she fires up every time and never misses a beat.

Parts are cheap and plentiful!

Just about everything that has failed on this car can be attributed to expected wear and tear.

A good looker too, in burgundy.

I replaced the front seats with high-backed power seats from a 1991 Cutlass Ciera, they bolted right in and made a world of difference in comfort.

What are you smoking? This was never a good car, even when it was a concept! It was a proud day for GM when this car went OUT of production!

What are YOU smoking? Judging from the good majority of reviews of the Celebrity, I'd say it was a good car.

Obviously this review is based on personal experience, and this one was pretty good. Before commenting, think about the perspective from which this review was written.

There is a Celebrity in our neighborhood whose door skins are rusted so bad that you can see the window regulators. Obviously rust can't stop it.
