1967 Chevrolet El Camino Malibu 454 CI

Summary:

Though A Ford Supporter, This Old Chevy Rocks!

Faults:

Nothing major except normal maintenance (oil changes/tune ups, etc.)

It could use new weather stripping.

General Comments:

I am a die-hard Ford truck man, but this Chevrolet is a major exception.

Grandpa's old car. He took meticulous care of it. There's no rust and all chrome and paint has held up nicely.

Original 327? engine switched out in late 80s for a 454 out of a mid-80s Winnebago motor home.

Stock 2-speed automatic transmission switched out at about the same time for a Torque-flite 3-speed.

I'm lucky to get above 10 mpg driving in this car.

Fantastic acceleration. Goes from 0-60 in about 8 seconds.

For part of the year, the El Camino sits in the garage. Every spring, I take it out on a rural, straight stretch of highway and floor it to get it back to shape. I've had it going 110 mph.

Even though it has a 454, it is fairly quiet in the city. The engine starts to really get noisy over about 70. And, at 110, I cannot hear the radio turned up full-blast.

Great old car!

Forgot one thing: low 12-second quarter mile time.

Here are some new things I learned about the El Camino over the past few months:

-the original engine was a 283, not a 327 like I said earlier

-built in the Fremont, CA plant

-the engine is a 1989 model.

Don't misunderstand, I'm a fan of El Caminos. But you say it goes 0-60 in about 8 seconds, which is probably about correct, but that would equal a 1/4 time of mid 15s, not low 12s. So let's keep it real here.

On another note, I always laugh when I see comments about 110mph, as if that's SO fast, even though I've personally had a full size 68 Mercury sedan with a 390 up to 120. And most modern 4 bangers can reach those speeds if you eliminate the governor.

1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 400 (402 BigBlock)

Summary:

Everyone should have a chance to drive a car like this!

Faults:

The water pump bearing was noisy, so I replaced the entire unit.

The driver's door lock could be difficult to unlock with the key.

The air shocks were shot, I'm not sure if they were factory installed, or if they were aftermarket.

It needed a valve job due to worn valve guides at about 45K. (This was a common problem with the early Chevy big block engines.)

General Comments:

The factory engine was powerful, but performance mods were added anyway. The factory heads needed a valve job, so a 3-angle job was performed, and bronze guides were added. Factory cam and gear-set were replaced. A Comp-Cams 268HE was installed. An Edelbrock 2P-180 intake was installed also. Factory carburation was retained. Exhaust was replaced with Casler headers and Thrush Turbo mufflers.

After these performance mods, this car's 0 - 60 times were in the 5.5 second range. (factory 3.73 posi-traction unit aided the quick acceleration!) I've had many cars over the years, but this was the fastest of them all.

The handling of the Camino was OK, but not great. It only had a small front sway bar. A larger front and rear bar, and stiffer front springs would have made a big difference in cornering ability. The tire technology in the early '80s was nothing like today. Low profile 16 or 17 inch tires would have made a huge difference.

Highway mileage was about 16MPG; around town was a big??

Lots of nice accessories: Air Conditioning, power windows and door locks, power steering and brakes, comfortable seats, courtesy lights, 4 speed transmission. Nice instrument package too. The factory radio was so-so, and it was replaced with a Pioneer AM/FM cassette deck. A set of Spark-o-matic 6"x9" speakers (remember those) was added to supplement the dash mounted mini speakers. What do I remember most? It was FUN TO DRIVE!!!

I also owned one of these beauties, Classic polar white with blue leather interior. I never turned so many heads as I did when I revved it up and turned it loose.

Its not just males who enjoy this classic...
