1995 Chevrolet Lumina

Summary:

A good reliable car and I enjoy it!

Faults:

I had to replace only a throttle position sensor and a window motor during the three years I have had this thing and have drove the crap out of it ever since.

General Comments:

I have no clue what goes on with cars on this site, but my 1995 Cheverlot Lumina is an awesome car. I drive this car 20 minutes at 55 mph to school everyday and around town and also never have any problems. So the every 5,000 miles I put on I have to replace this and that I do not understand. My brothers 94 Grand Prix trust me identical car had 230,000 miles before he let it go and did not have 1/10 the problems of people claim on this site.

1995 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1 V6 SFI

Summary:

Rice eater, and reliable too

Faults:

Basically, the only things that have gone wrong in the year I've owned it are either basic maintenance that I didn't do or the cause of beating on it. I'm a lube technician, and I'm also in school for mechanics.

The first thing to go wrong was fo inspection it needed ball joints, that was the first week I had the car, so it was from the previous owner.

The next thing was the battery died, easy fix.

Next was the alternator, and when having that done I also had them do my serpentine belt.

After that my brake pads wore off and started grinding against my rotors, which is typical for any car if you don't replace the pads in time, but it was still an easy enough fix.

My heater core started leaking, but I used some sealant to stop the leak.

I replaced the thermostat which was kind of a pain, but not the worst thing in the world.

I also replaced the exhaust gasket (manifold-downpipe), and a few weeks later the entire cat back exhaust due to large holes in the muffler, all of it was fairly easy.

General Comments:

The car has been very good to me. It is very roomy, which is convenient because I'm a bassist with large equipment. It is very comfortable, and I make 5 hour trips from NH to NY about once a month.

Although it's not the fastest car in the world, the thing still has balls. I've raced many a rice beater and put them to shame in a little family car. It's no WRX, but it definitely beats those Civics and Celicas out there.

The handling is fine, no complaints about it really.

All in all, it's a great car. I only wish they had made them with 5 speed manuals, that would just make it perfect.

Did you beat a Civic DX with a 1.6 litre. They try and race me with my 2.2 litre Honda Accord and I smoke them too.

1995 Chevrolet Lumina LS 3.1 liter

Summary:

It's not worth the time, money or effort to own this car; it's garbage!

Faults:

When I first bought the car, I had to put a 50.00 throttle sensor in it. A throttle sensor helps your overdrive on your transmission to work.

Then about a month later, I replaced the rear suspension, struts, mounts etc... I still get a clunking noise, then the brake lights went out, lord help me it was connected on top of the blinkers, and that's why my blinkers didn't work; there goes another 60.00 down the drain.

The water pump went out twice within a SIX MONTH PERIOD! There goes 25.00 for each time.

I don't recommend this car at all to anyone, no matter what year. My aunt had a 1992, and it was almost identical in problems; after about 150-180 thousand miles the head gaskets will go! Sell them while you can!

General Comments:

It's a real smooth ride, comfortable! But the gas mileage sucks real bad!

What do you expect from an eleven year old car with 129,000 miles. I hate to be the one to tell you that things do wear out. The things you have mentioned sound like wear and tear items to me. Oh and by the way, we have a '96 lumina that gets 29-31 miles per gallon on the highway with the AC on. That kind of mileage certainly doesn't suck to me, especially from a full sized sedan.

Just to clarify, you bought a 10 year old car and have had to do some repairs to it? What do you think happens when you buy a vehicle that has been in continuous usage for a decade? Old cars break down. That's what they do. New cars don't break much, but cost significantly more. It's your choice.

I can't comment on reliability or gas mileage, but I had to test drive one a few miles and I was quite impressed with the car. It was very roomy, comfortable, the dash layout was pleasing and overall it was a likable car. The turn signal lever is too short though. I also found it to be quick enough for me on the highway. I'd hardly label one a piece of crap unless it had high mileage (I don't consider 120k very high) and it was neglected. Kind of a more sensible-sized Caprice.
