1998 Chevrolet S-10 LS Extended cab 2.2

Summary:

A functional and reliable little truck

Faults:

The fan clutch failed at around 40,000 miles.

The U-joints went at around 45,000 miles.

General Comments:

The little truck lacks power, however, has proved to be most reliable.

The third door is a wonderful convenience.

The interior is simple and well designed with functional ergonomics.

The exterior looks great when washed and waxed.

1998 Chevrolet S-10 Super Sport 4.3L V6

Summary:

Reliable, but not the best build-quality

Faults:

Check Engine light came on at 13,000 miles. Eventually went off.

Alternator went out at 60,000 miles.

Water pump went out at 80,000 miles.

Rear drum brakes started leaking... front brakes started binding and destroyed the rotors. $700.00 in brake work at 90,000 miles.

When I first got it, the headlights would turn themselves off for no reason... this wasn't good when I was driving at night.

Windshield wipers will work sometimes... other times they won't even come on.

Reclining lever for the driver's seat broke off around 30,000 miles.

Grinding sound when the wheels are turned all the way to the right or to the left... dealer worked on it, but did not fix it.

General Comments:

Overall, it's been a decent and reliable little truck. The ZQ8 suspension on the SS package gives it some great handling. The engine and transmission have been ROCK SOLID the entire time I've owned this truck. The rest of it, though, leaves much to be desired. The build quality on these trucks is really bad. I have to turn my radio up pretty loudly to drown out all the squeaks and rattles.

Listen. I have a 97 s-10 SS that I have had for about a year now. I have already put 20k miles on it and it runs like a dream. I have had no problems with the motor or the transmission. I hardly believe that your SS has had as many problems as you say it has. It is a Super Sport s-10, NOT a 4cylinder LS. These trucks require constant attention and loving care. If not, your truck will fall apart just like yours did. I just think you need to learn how to take better care of your "RARE" truck.

1998 Chevrolet S-10 LS 2.2 LTR SFI 2.2 4 cylinder

Summary:

A regrettable waste of my hard earned money!

Faults:

Rear view mirror has fallen off.

Right side mirror has fallen off. On it's own. Was recovered, but is broke due to falling on the pavement.

Seat adjusters have broken off.

Center console cover has broken off.

Vanity light covers on visors have broken off.

My cable that holds the spare tire up under the bed snapped. Spare tire was lost. It was a nightmare trying to get a new one. I never got it and must use a self purchased spare. I have to carry the spare in the rear extended cab due to the dealer accusing me of breaking it on purpose to get a new spare??? Figure that one??

I now have an electrical problem. My truck is consistently stuttering and the console lights flash off and on and the engine dies when I try and drive.

General Comments:

I will never buy another GM car in my life and neither will any one of my family members. I will warn all my friends and anyone else not to buy GM. It is the first one I have owned and I regret it!!

The warranty is basically worthless. I get flak from all the Chevy dealers that I contact trying to use my warranty.

1998 Chevrolet S-10 4.3L

Summary:

Well worth the $13,000 I paid it new.

Faults:

Automatic transmission slipped at 61,000 miles. A new transmission filter and transmission oil change helped quite a bit, however there is still some slippage. I have found that transmissions for this year has had problems.

Both seat levers have broken.

Various squeaks throughout the truck.

Alternator and battery went bad at 62,600 miles.

General Comments:

Seats and ride are uncomfortable.

Excellent for moving or hauling small items.
