Summary:

Good, but problematic

Faults:

The window seals on my car are shrinking, and you can hear the wind whistling in.

The electricals went on it, and when I got it repaired, the stereo no longer works.

I have a 4 disk CD changer that is fried because of this, and now I am replacing the battery for the 3rd time.

I have had the alternator changed, and the brakes done 2 times as well.

I love the car, but there are a lot of problems with the designer.

Summary:

A car with 1960s technology assembled in the 21st century

Faults:

Like more other victims, one of the four windows has lost power and stopped working due to a loose connection.

Power lock on the passenger side died twice. It has the same buzzing noise. Both window and lock problems happened at 50K KM.

Radiator hose changed at 100K KM.

General Comments:

Very roomy. 5 obese adults can sit in this car without their arms touching each other.

Generous size trunk. It can fit in two full size luggage with no problems. Cargo net allows you to manage grocery shopping bags and small items.

Acceleration is below par with this car. They claim the 2.7 V6 engine pumps out 200 HP, but with weight, there is hardly any power left for the driver, though it still better than the inline 4 you get from Korea.

Body roll is always a problem since the first on the road. It rolls even worse than the Caravan. Understeer is always noticeable no matter how slow you turn in a corner. Both due to its nose heavy design like most American cars, and poorly engineered suspension.

Very bouncy ride, and it gets worse as it ages. It almost feels like I'm riding on one of those exercise balls at the gym. If I have a child, he'll probably throw up because of motion sickness before we arrive the destination. Though the suspension is soft, but not exactly comfy. Somehow the engineers at Dodge/Chrsyler manage to build a suspension so soft that also picks up all the small vibrations and sends it to the driver.

A fair comment. I think mine is one of those rare breed that does not have any major mechanical breakdowns, at least so far. The engine is running smooth and is just as quiet as day 1. Transmission is sluggish, but no break downs at all.

Fuel economy is not really that bad. Given this is an American V6 engine. It can hit 23-25 MPG on highway.

Summary:

Not bad if you don't mind putting a new engine in your car every 50 to 60 thousand miles

Faults:

The engine had to be replaced after only 58,000 miles due to "engine sludge".

Due to the fact I still had another year and a half of payments, I decided to replace the engine. But of course this engine is beginning the tell tale signs of the good 'ole "engine sludge" build up. I do not have the heart to sell it to anyone, not even my worst enemy. So I will drive it till it dies AGAIN. Hopefully my children will not be in the car with me when it decides to go to the great lemon in the sky.

General Comments:

Feel absolutely violated by Daimler Chrysler Dodge, because after this first engine blew, I learned on the web that they knew about this "engine sludge" problem for more than two years.

Two words will solve your problem: synthetic oil. Don't be cheap, people!

Summary:

All around Excellent Vehicle

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Excellent ride, better than my 2006 Grand Prix. Engine is very smooth and the quietest of any car owned. Extremely reliable, never any problems. Good performance for a 2.7 engine. Wish I would`ve bought another one over the new Grand Prix.

Summary:

Has been good to me. Still going

Faults:

Front wheel bearings have needed replacing.

In the past couple of years following about 2 tanks of gas an oil top up is needed. Not showing a bad emsissions test though, so it must have a slow leak out when driving.

Trunk key chamber has seized twice and needed replacing.

General Comments:

It is still running well. I bought at one year old in 2001 with 25,000 KM on the engine. No problems with the engine or transmission as yet at 230,000 km. I have heard the 2.7 L can be trouble, but no problems here. I must be lucky. Body is holding up OK for a car that is almost 8 years old. Just a few minor rust spots. Windows ice shut easily in the winter on this car, and can be annoying if you do drive through coffee first thing in the morning and you live in Canada. Huge interior and trunk space has been a great plus. I am pleased with this car.

To the above commentor. With 321,000 km's on a car (let alone a Chrysler) what did you expect!? Of course it is going to have problems. Just be thankful it is still running!

8th Aug 2010, 16:07

To both of above commenters and original poster: my 2000 Intrepid 2.7 now has 330,000 kms on it and it still runs like new. It all depends on how you drive/maintain it. Synthetic oil and reasonable driving habits will make these cars last as long as you want. I am expecting to get another couple of hundred thousand kms out of this car. It still has the original exhaust, shocks, and everything else.

As a mechanic I must mention a warning about the 2.7 engine.

Although the other comments state the 2.7 engine in these cars have gone to relatively high KMs for them... 90% of the 2.7 DO NOT get past 115,000kms without severe engine damage internally, without warning.

You would be smart NOT TO BUY a vehicle with one.

Replacement used engines cannot be found as they are basically all bad (90%).

Don't be cheap, people! A few extra bucks for synthetic oil will keep these engines running like new forever.

Mine now has 350,000 km on it, and has not required any repairs. I change the oil every 15000 km (sometimes more) and I still don't have to top up the oil between changes. As for the extra cost of synthetic oil, is is mostly offset by the fact that you don't have to change it as often. Like the mechanic on an old TV commercial for Fram oil filters used to say about the higher cost of their filters: You can pay me now, (for the filter) or you can pay me later (for the repairs).
