1997 Dodge Avenger ES 6 cyl

Summary:

Bestest car in the world

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I love my car and would never consider selling it.

I've added ground effects, flo-master exhaust, a super-duper sound system and painted it jet black.

I tool around in it year-round and it is surprisingly good in the snow! (The ground effects in the front make an excellent plow!)

1997 Dodge Avenger ES 2.5L V6

Summary:

DISASTROUS MONEY PITT!!

Faults:

Everything has gone wrong within two years. First two months had to put a new transmission in.

4 months later all 4 O2 sensors, couple months after that new distributor, cap and rotor.

The lower control arm broke causing the drive-shaft to break as well.

The problems kept coming. Needed a second trans a year later, along with a new flywheel.

Little later after that the engine had a rod knock so I just put a newer engine in.

Just the other night the control arm broke again and also broke the drive-shaft too!! Causing me to fly into a ditch and almost kill myself.

I bought the car for $5000 two years later and then some, I now owe just under $9000 in all the money I've put into it. This car is a disaster money pitt!!

General Comments:

When its fixed it runs like a pearl, problem is.. getting it run!

It's a sweet little car just need the $$$ to fix it ever couple months.

I've heard some avengers are better than others, I didn't hear too many bad things about this car until I got it. Now I wish I would have never bought it or even fixed it!!

1997 Dodge Avenger Base Model Inline 4 Cylinder

Summary:

Not many around, Avengers are RARE!

Faults:

80,000 miles may need to replace an EGR Valve and driver side ball joint. That happened to my daily driver Avenger with 81,992 miles. My other Avenger with 38,725 has nothing wrong with it, I hope it stays that way, it can be expensive.

General Comments:

I have two Avengers. Both are Base 1997 models. The one with 81,992 miles is my daily driver to work and my other 1997 with 38,725 miles is my "fast and the furious" car, rims and all, but no body kit needed... looks fine without it. Yes, 38,000 ORIGINAL miles. Avengers aren't fast on acceleration, my white one hits 60mph in about 7.8 seconds, but when you hit the gas at 10mph, MAN does that thing move! Both MOVE at 10mph and higher, it's just 0-60mph. Stock it reaches 60mph in 9 seconds. The car's top speed is 125-130mph, but who cares about speed. It's about style. The car is absolutely beautiful without a body kit. Chrysler did a great job with the Avenger especially the 97-00 model. Let's hope they do good with the new 2007 Avenger model.

1997 Dodge Avenger

Faults:

My teenage son recently purchased a '97 Dodge Avenger ES. It did not come with a remote for the door lock/alarm. The alarm seems to have a mind of its own. We can purchase a remote for $130 from the dealership, but will that cure the alarm sounding off without cause? The car has other problems as well and we are addressing those as they pop-up. Although, my son likes the car, I don't expect he will own it very long. The problems are becoming too stressful on dear old Mom. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Strictly my opinion, but I think it is best to avoid automatic transmissions in most American made cars (unless it's an old 3-speed auto - they're pretty much bullet-proof).

Also, the fewer "luxuries" (ie. electronic gadgets such as power this, that, and the other thing) your car has are fewer things to go wrong.

The Avengers sure look nice, but they're simply a 2-door Stratus (or Sebring or Breeze). Except for the 2.0L standard shift models, these cars are plagued with problems.
