1998 Dodge Durango SLT

Summary:

I love my Durango like people love pets!

Faults:

The starter went on Christmas Eve.

Tires are expensive cause they are so big!

Middle row gets stuck!

Changing the tire was a hassle for my 18 yr old daughter.

Bumper covers crack easily!

General Comments:

I have had some trouble, but I love my car.

Its reliable except once.

It fits everything I need it to and more.

I never have to worry about getting stuck, especially in snow.

Has good height for my daughters, who both just got their licenses.

Has a rebuilt engine!

1998 Dodge Durango 5.9

Summary:

Money Pit

Faults:

I had to post a review of this vehicle just to add my two cents worth.

This is the most unreliable vehicle with the most costly repairs that I have ever owned.

The first big ticket item was the transmission that went out when the family and I went on a trip to Hilton Head. As we still had forward gears, I was able to drive to the repair shop, but I still dropped $1300 to repair the transmission.

The second big ticket item was the rear end that went out when we went on another vacation. We ended up having to put a whole new rear end at a cost of $700.

The last issue was the issue that Dodge should be sued over, which is the sludge issue. At a traffic light my oil pressure would go to zero and then jump back up after I gained rpm's.

General Comments:

I love the way this SUV looks and the exhaust is nice and throaty.

Other than the above there is nothing good about this vehicle.

If you're looking around for an SUV don't get a Durango!!

1998 Dodge Durango SLT 5.2

Summary:

Never, ever, ever again will I buy a Dodge or Chrysler product

Faults:

New Engine (at 60,000 miles)

Upper Ball Joints.

Lower Ball Joints.

A/C Compressor.

A/C Compressor (Again)

A/C Condenser coil.

Steering Stabilizer.

Water pump (25,000 miles - no warranty coverage)

Power steering pump.

Alternator.

General Comments:

I am very meticulous with my vehicles' maintenance schedules. I keep a book on each vehicle and use MS Outlook calendar. The motor spun a bearing at 60K miles and the dealership told us it was due to sludge build up. I about lost my mind - showed them receipts from Auto Zone and Advance Auto - where I buy my oil and filters, etc, etc. They didn't want to hear it.

I have to say, based experiences I've had with my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee (superb vehicle, by the way), that Dodge is seriously lacking in the customer service department. They are good at making excuses, not making good on commitment to customer satisfaction.

I've been reading the ODI site about the recalls and investigations about the defective ball joints and Dodge's responses. Dodge won't admit they put out a faulty product when statistics prove otherwise. Of course, it's cheaper to lie than to admit fault and recall any more vehicles than they are forced to. All about the bottom line and the stockholders - never mind the safety of those who purchase their products!

We love the room this vehicle offers and the visibility in traffic, but we call this our money pit. We should feel like we're driving a new vehicle, but we're waiting for the next bomb to drop. We talk about selling it, but we want to get some mileage from the repair bills we've sunk our cash into.

1998 Dodge Durango SLT 5.2

Summary:

CRAP

Faults:

Water pump, Brakes (2x), Missing during acceleration, blown thermostat and gasket, Malfunctioning radio.

General Comments:

I wanted a Durango for a long time thinking that the room would be great in addition to a V8 paired up with the 4 wheel drive.

The day after buying the car, it started to miss and lose power while on hills. Later, the thermostat AND the waterpump blew out and sprayed coolant out everywhere. While tearing the waterpump apart, I discovered that all of the hosed were rotten and that a brown gunk had accumulated in the hoses.

Generally, this car is a money pit and not trustworthy. I traded it off after a few months for a Mazda just to avoid any future problems.
