2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4.7

Summary:

Best SUV ever built by any manufacturer

Faults:

I have not had one single problem except for one recall on ball joints, which were replaced free-of-charge.

General Comments:

I switched to the Durango in 2001 after owning GM SUV's for years. I still have the Durango. It is without question the most reliable, most maintenance-free vehicle I have ever owned.

Regarding rollover, I had a near-head-on collision and took a roadside bank at 60 MPH. Durango was on two wheels, but came right back to all fours.

I also tow a small camper with it and it pulls it like it is not even there.

Regarding brakes, I average about 40,000 miles between front brake changes.

2001 Dodge Durango r/t 5.9

Summary:

Love to hate

Faults:

Ball joints, upper and lower. Dealer paid for the uppers due to a recall. I paid for the lowers.

Check engine light on for over a year. Issue is a TSB for the torque converter. I had repair order done, but the light is still on. To fix the dealer says to replace the torque converter and front pump, it would cost 1200.00. Due to age it would better serve me to replace with new one (3800.00) installed, since the transmission is still running with no real issues other than minor slipping.

Engine crankshaft seal replaced at 85,000 miles.

General Comments:

Vehicle has been cared for like no other car. All fluids are synthetic since day one. Maintenance intervals always followed. I also own a 82 vette, so I'm a perfectionist in every way. I have been lucky to use same dealer mechanic for 5 years. Whatever was suggested to be replaced, it was.

I upgraded the shocks to Edelbrock, intake to K+N, exhaust to Gibson, and the tires to Toyo Proxes - best tire I ever owned.

Overall in the 5 years I have owned and continue to drive, I'm pretty happy. The car has treated me well with no breakdowns at all. You know what you're getting in regards to fuel economy so why moan.

You would not be so happy with your vehicle if you lived in an area with required emissions testing. You would have to either fix the transmission or sell the vehicle. The check engine light is not so trivial as so many people seem to think.

For the few real problems that you have had, some of which were under warranty, and the general positive comments you have made of the vehicle, I am confused why you would put a sad face icon and not at least a neutral???

2001 Dodge Durango Sport V8

Summary:

Nice styling, but very poor reliability

Faults:

I work for a small police agency. Our agency purchased 4 Dodge Durangos. They are not tough enough for police use.

All four of them have had fairly major problems of one sort or another.

On mine, the transmission leaked badly and had to go in for new seals with only 3500 miles on the vehicle.

Two of them developed a tendency to "stall" and quit running. The problem could not be diagnosed by mechanics.

Two of them had the driver's seat break loose from the floor after the failure of the small metal cast part that hold it down. (the part simply broke in half)

The gas mileage is pathetic. I average between 8 and 10 mpg in town.

I would never buy one of these vehicles myself. My experience with the Durango has been enough to convince me to avoid Dodge products. The fit and finish, as well as the mechanical reliability are lacking.

2001 Dodge Durango Sport 4.7

Summary:

Awsome truck

Faults:

I have had only one thing wrong with my Durango. My engine light came on due to a vacuum hose leak. This accrued at around 35000 miles.

General Comments:

When I bought the truck I was very impressed with its performance.

I added a flowmaster to it and a different air cleaner, and I noticed a great deal of increse to its power.

My next truck will be another dodge.
