1999 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7L

Summary:

This is not a good car too many complaints

Faults:

My engine fail at 79,000. I had light gray smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. I heard tapping noise during acceleration. I have been told several times the 2.7 engines are bad in the intrepids. I have only had my car for six months.

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7

Summary:

Maintenance Nightmare

Faults:

$800.00 A/C repair at 65000 miles.

$250.00 Radiator fan motor replacement at 80000 miles.

Recently - nothing, but problems, to name a few...currently, no speedometer & transmission won't shift (hopefully the speed sensor described by so many others - I will find out tomorrow), bad rack that needs to be replaced, steering very loose - oh, yes and of course, I also have the leaking oil pan gasket.

General Comments:

I love the size of the car and the ride. However, after reading the postings and comparing to my experiences (in the short time that I have owned the vehicle) I will be trading this car in very soon. I have owned many cars by various manufacturers and have never had the dependability issues that I have with this one. My mechanic (and luckily a long time friend) has advised me to get rid of the car - and quickly. The engineering makes even the simple things like changing a battery a major undertaking. This is my first and last Chrysler product.

I totally agree with you, I finally was about to trade our 1999 Dodge Intrepid in, with very little trade in. We are now driving a 2005 KIA Sedona. It's amazing what the foreign car companies are giving on their warranties. 5 years, 50,000. (bumper to bumper) or 10 years, 100,000 (on all major components). Plus 5 years road side assistance. Tells me that they believe in their products.

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7

Faults:

Purchased 1999 2.7 L Intrepid. Engine replaced at 54,000 miles. Could not produce one only oil change receipt, Gold Seal warranty would not cover engine replacement. Front driver and passenger window replaced twice. Numerous sensors changed. Coolant housing changed, leaked. Nice car to drive, comfortable seats. Problems on 1999.

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7

Summary:

Love the room and ride, but the car is a LEMON

Faults:

In 2001 I had to replace some sensors on the engine.

In 2003 I had to rebuild the A/C (compressor, heater core)

2004 the engine quit. I had the car in the shop for a month. I was told that Chrysler's extended warranty would not cover all of the cost. I cost me $2,500 out of pocket to get the car back.

2005 the heat and A/C control panel has to be replaced. Cost unknown at this time. I have no heat. My nephew has the same problem with his Intrepid.

2005 the drivers power window has stopped working. The driver side rear door lock has also stopped working.

General Comments:

After paying out the money to get my car up and running again in August of 2004 I drove home and watched the evening news on ABC TV in Chicago. They documented at least 20,000 Intrepids and showed a lot of them on film with all of the same problems that the rest of us are having. Chrysler refused comment. Most of the cars were just parked in their gargage because they did not have the funds to fix them.

Somewhere along the line I think it is time for the our law makers in Washington to step in and do something about Daimler-Chrysler to make them accountable for what they have done.

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 Liter

Summary:

If the Intrepid design could get the kinks worked out, I would buy another one

Faults:

Interior lights and headlights flickered within 2 months of purchase. Dealer could not find problem. Recently a mechanic found a wire that was rubbing behind the dash and re-wrapped it and now the lights do not flicker.

Oil light comes on whenever I use the brakes. The car is not low on oil. According to mechanic the sensor is broken.

Transmission had to be replaced at 92,000 miles.

Replaced 2 transmission computer chips. One before the transmission replacement, one after.

All 4 windows have stopped working at one time or another. Replaced all 4 motors.

Drivers window slips off track frequently.

The drivers seat has gotten stuck with the back reclined too far twice.

The fan for heat/air conditioning has stopped working altogether once. Replaced a resistor. Currently the fan only works on High.

Replaced battery recently. Why is the battery so extremely difficult to replace? Had to remove the front wheel and take off a panel in the wheel well to replace battery.

General Comments:

I bought the car brand new in 1999. I think the Intrepid is very comfortable to drive. I have driven it all over the U.S. with little or no trouble. The interior is very roomy and comfortable.

The troubles I have had with the lights, battery, seat and fan are what I consider problems with any car, although the battery is hard to replace.

I was very disappointed to have to replace the transmission at 92,000 miles. The computer chips that had to be replaced were frustrating and expensive because if the chips malfunction the car will not go out of 2nd gear.

Replacing the motors in all 4 windows seems a bit extreme.

Overall, I like the Intrepid. As a single woman who owns a car it has not given me many more problems than any other car I have owned in the past. For 6 1/2 years I have driven this car on long trips, around town, and in all weather. It has not impressed me any more than any other car I have owned. I drive my Intrepid because so far it is still cheaper to fix than buy a new car.
