1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter V6

Summary:

Most unreliable car I've owned

Faults:

Cassette player and integrated clock failed prior to 35k miles.

Power door locks failed to work prior to 35k miles.

Input speed sensor failed at 47k miles, locking the transmission into 2nd gear or "limp mode".

Both cooling fans and rear passenger power window motor failed prior to 51k miles.

At 78k miles, engine had catastrophic failure due to "sludge". Dealer and Chrysler insist that this was due to lack of oil changes and not poor workmanship, even though there are many other cases of sludge failure with this particular engine.

General Comments:

Good small turning radius for tight parking.

Seats not extremely comfortable on long distances.

Interior and trunk are very roomy.

Rides smoothly.

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.0

Faults:

Transmission Sensors (twice)

Power Windows (driver's side)

Hood Shocks

Steering Lock-up

Sloppy Steering

Driver's seat Adjuster worn.

General Comments:

The car stopped shifting out of 1st gear until you hit 55-60mph on the interstate. We took it to the dealership and they charged us $300+ dollars to fix it. It happened less than a year later and the dealership refused to honor their parts or workmanship. We purchased the parts from the dealership and installed ourselves for $48.

Fuses blew out all of a sudden and the power windows wouldn't work. We replaced the fuses and then only the driver's side window wouldn't work and still does not.

Hood shocks continually fall out of their mounts.

When calling the dealership and inquiring about the steering lock-up or power steering problems, they stated that they had never heard of this before. They said not to worry about it, it probably wouldn't happen again. Yesterday when I was taking my daughter to school, the steering locked up at 35mph and we ended up in the ditch. She was scared and stated that this was the third time this has happened with her in the car. Pretty sad when your daughter keeps count. Now, I cannot drive the car until the steering is fixed...

When the seat is in a slightly reclined position, it pops in and out of the locked position.

1999 Dodge Intrepid Base 2.7

Faults:

The oil drain ports in the heads clogged. Then the oil baked on the overhead cams looking like burnt molasses. I use Mobil 1 oil. It wound up taking me 2 months and a lawyer to make the warranty company replace the motor.

Otherwise we love the car. It's gonna cost about a total of $4,000.00 to repair.

By intermittent, you mean it feels like it sticks or stutters? Did you replace that hose that developed the hole? Even if you filled up the reservoir, if you didn't replace the hose it could still have a loss of pressure. Also, did you fill the reservoir to the correct level? My dad is one of those people who likes to "top it off" on fluids, but all that does is over pressurize the system and blow a seal. Fill to the level marked on the dipstick, which is different for whether the car is running (hot) or turned off (cold).

1999 Dodge Intrepid Base 2.7L

Summary:

Buy the best extended warranty covering most things

Faults:

Speed sensor has gone out twice. Each time, transmission would not shift and speedometer didn't work. Cost about 60 - 80$ each time to fix.

The driver side front window has shifted out so that it won't go up straight. Estimate to fix: 80-120$

A/C went out. Estimate to fix: Unknown.

General Comments:

This is a spacious car.

Big trunk. (Could be better if the trunk door was a bit wider)

Looks great.

Enough power.

Comfortable ride.

Known problems like the speed sensor and driver side window should be recalled by Chrysler.

Mechanic told me that the compressor is designed to run even when the heater is turned on!

I was just wondering if when the speed sensor was bad in your Intrepid, if your car wouldn't shift and the speedometer wouldn't work just when it was cold, or would it do it all the time? My Intrepid is doing the same thing.

Thanks.

Jaime.
