2002 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

I had a PCM replaced when I first bought it from a reputable dealer on a warranty.

I also owned a 1968 Chrysler Newport, a 1974 Dodge Dart, and a 1994 Dodge Shadow. All great cars; it's how you care for them.

General Comments:

I use Castrol 100% Synthetic on my 2002 Intrepid, the car is in for service when it is needed.

I am very pleased with my car.

I also had the battery replaced.

I installed a JENSEN HD Radio.

Anyone seeking the Auto Repair manual, I ordered it on-line at Rock Auto Parts.

I use Genuine Dodge Parts.

ADVICE! Never buy discount Auto-Parts, they're Junk!

I use Fram Oil Filters Heavy Duty Service and Fram Air Filters, (BTW don't feed stuff in disagreement, it's sheer nonsense, my cousin is an auto engineer).

If you are having troubles, consult the dealer, they have the most training, I use the 5 Star Rated ones.

ASE certification is the best for any seasoned mechanic.

2002 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.5

Summary:

Daimler/Chrysler were idiots to stop producing this car - it is the best Mopar I've ever owned

Faults:

Had to have the rear ball joints replaced (not unusual at 103,000.

This is the most reliable, high performance Mopar product I've ever owned.

General Comments:

Outstanding MPG, great ride, have gone cross-country without a problem. Just standard maintenance - and I adhere to standard manufacturer recommended maintenance. It is extremely stable on snow/ice (I live in Colorado) and gives me great gas mileage with a smooth ride, tons of interior room and trunk space.

The 3.5 L engine is a dream.

I totally agree!!! I miss my Intrepid something fierce!!! Unfortunately, I had to upgrade to a larger vehicle, so I bought a Durango with the Hemi, and I do love it, but there was just something about the Intrepid. It was a 2001 with the 3.2 and it did have 189000 miles on it, but I still loved it. The 3.2 and 3.5 engines in these cars are fantastic. The perfect blend of power, efficiency and reliability. I'm glad that you are enjoying your car!

My 02 Intrepid (3.5 liter engine) has just under 60,000 miles on it and I've begun having problems with the transmission -- it sometimes hangs in first gear and won't shift into second, etc. If I stop, put it in park, turn off engine, then re-start, it works until the next time I have to slow down rather quickly. Then there is a knocking sound, and when I start to move it is stuck in first gear.

I've seen some comments listed regarding this in the 2.7 liter engine, but not the 3.5.

I own a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with the 3.5 engine. I had issues with the transmission at around 90K miles. It was about an $800 procedure to have something on the outside of the transmission replaced. Now I'm at 140K and still no more issues. I'm crossing my fingers that I can get another 60K out of this baby.

Step one on a tranny with that mileage is to change out the fluid. Do NOT do a power flush. Just change out the fluid. It takes time. One method is to drain what will easily drain whenever you change the oil, then replace only what drained out. If your mechanic ever recommends a power flush, say "thank you", and immediately get a new mechanic.

2002 Dodge Intrepid ES 2.7

Summary:

It is a riding defect on wheels, not worth the money spent

Faults:

My intake manifold gasket blew at 80,000.

My water pump went out at 112000 miles, causing the oil to sludge and the engine to lock up.

My inside overhead lights and dash lights flicker on and off at times for no apparent reason.

My alignment stays off after being fixed.

My oil light comes on after long trips for no reason. I replaced the oil sending unit and it still did the same. My mechanic said it might be my oil pump. It's been doing it since 15000 miles new.

My check engine light stays on for no reason.

General Comments:

I love the look and how it rides new.
