1998 Dodge Stratus ES 2.4L

Summary:

Very reliable commuter car!

Faults:

Nothing! This car has 330 000 km and still has the original engine and transmission. No work has been done except regular maintenance and tune-ups. The interior has no sign of wear. The exterior paint is good except for a few rust spots. This has been driven on Ontario roads for the past 13 years, and is in outstanding condition.

General Comments:

The acceleration is good, it cruises highway at a reasonable RPM. The car is basic, no gadgets.

The seats are comfy, and go a long way back. I am 6' and have no issue with room. The back seat is wide, with lots of head and leg room.

The lights on the car are good, but the plastic does need to be cleaned every 6 months. They go dull over time.

The alignment has never been done in my 8 year ownership, and it still drives straight and true.

1998 Dodge Stratus Base 2.4 Liter

Summary:

Almost a lemon, but it can taste like an orange

Faults:

Everything was alright with this car. Ever since we passed 100,000 miles, odd stuff happened. Such as the A/C of this car had to be repaired. Paint starts to chip off, after about 10 years after its release.

Head gasket blew at 130,000 miles.

General Comments:

This car is really more for the daily grocery commute. I could never take this car for any road trips.

My parents passed it down to me. I got attached to it, and it's not a lemon... yet. I have a feeling that it will die soon.

I took it to the four different repair shops. Due to the fact that something smells like its burning. All of them told me that the car is fine, and it has no problem.

I did some research and it turned out that Chrysler really poorly made this vehicle. I mean what kind of car company would design a car that you can't access the battery under the hood You have to take out the front wheel to access it.

So in terms of buying used American cars, don't buy Chrysler...

1998 Dodge Stratus ES 2.4L - 4 cylinder

Summary:

Dodge!!! Never again

Faults:

Here it goes:

Head gasket went 5 times.

Trunk key lock broken.

Water pump went 2 times and timing belt once.

Front struts changed 2 times.

Battery changed 4 times.

Driver seat broken ($60 to change at junk yard).

Changed radiator hose.

Changed heater core hose.

Changed spark plug, wires, distributor twice.

Resistor coil blew 4 times before fixing it myself

(resoldered the coil without the sacrificial part).

Rear flex line blocked both side. Rear caught fire and had to replace, wheel hub, wheel cylinder, pad, drums and emergency brake cable, and this is on both sides.

Flex line broke twice in front, and caused a loss of brakes on the highway one time.

A/C gone long time ago.

Power window broke on 2 windows.

Rising mechanism for windows broken, and caused front windows to not close properly.

Front wheel hubs changed twice.

Bad rusting on wheel wells.

Upper control arms changed 3 times.

Changed oil pan.

Radiator drain plug broken and casing rad to leak (as if I would pay $250 for a new radiator because of a drain plug).

Problem with exhaust manifold, but never fixed.

Best of all: lower control arms changed 4 times in the last 6 years, and a week ago the ball joint broke and we lost the front wheel; that caused the bottom of the car to scrape on the road, and also broke the drive axle.

And now we are looking for a new car.

General Comments:

What a useless unreliable car. Being an engineer myself, I don't understand how a multi-billion dollar company can design and engineer something so cheaply and badly.

Why would someone put a battery in the wheel well??? I really don't know!!!

Also there is no room to do repairs under the hood.

For a 4 cyl, it is not that great on fuel.

On a positive note, the car is really comfortable and handles the road quite well. We feel safe with the kids inside.

I have a 98 Dodge Stratus ES with the V6. Very good on gas mileage and drives nicely on the road or the highway. It has 150000 miles on it, and the only major thing I have replaced is the exhaust O2 sensors.

I have had to change the battery in it, and it was actually very simple to do if you just take the front wheel off. However, I took it out without taking the wheel off. It just was easier to do with the wheel off.

It sounds to me like this car was a serious LEMON. There are somethings you can expect to change on a car if you keep it for very long, but this sounds ridiculous.

I have a 98 Stratus 2.4l 4 cylinder, 129400 miles, 185 hp. And regular maintenance is always necessary, but it sounds like you either didn't install professionally, or didn't use a better part for its time. Instead of replacing, I've been custom modifying and installing more performance parts; they hold up way better.

Great on gas. Lots of torque. For sure it's the best 4 cylinder I've ever had.
