Rear axle shaft bearings and seals.
Right rear axle shaft.
General Comments:
Most reliable car ever, I see why the police and taxi cabs used them; too bad they were discontinued.

The "standard for decades now" has been for the fuel tank to be between the two axles and "under the rear seat"? That so? Can you name even ONE US built rear wheel drive sedan (NOT a truck/SUV/crossover) that has this arrangement? Even just one?

I agree with your comments.
That said, the Crown Vic. had to have an end at some point.
The architecture of the car was a bit (I am gentle) dated. The obvious example would be the location of the fuel tank, which was at the back of the rear axle, while the standard for decades now is have it between the two axles; the most common location on most cars being under the rear seat.
While speaking of the fuel tank, from an architectural standpoint, it is of another age to spend half a meter of the total car length just for the fuel tank. That space is not part of the passenger space, neither can be really used as part of the trunk space, just a waste.
