1995 Ford Escort LX Sport 1.9L EFI

Summary:

An eager little car with style

Faults:

Nothing major has happenend.

The speedometer dances a bit above 75.

My shifter boot won't seem to stay on all the way. Oh well.

General Comments:

This car has been great to me.

I've had no mechanical problems with it and have kept up with maintenance intervals. I would really suggest using the Ford Motorcraft plugs in this car.

Even when I've gone past an oil change or tune up, it still just charges on like a champ.

The thing starts right up every time, and it just feels like it loves to go places.

Zipping around windy roads is very fun in this car. It being a 2 door hatch, you can really get a feel for its size and toss it around.

The sport package is cool. I love the alloy wheels and the spoiler.

I would recommend this car to most people. It's great on gas and is fun to drive. I haven't driven the automatic, but the 5 speed manual is great.

1995 Ford Escort Wagon 1.9

Summary:

If they made a 2003 I would definitely buy one

Faults:

Timing belt broke 108,000 miles.

Brakes about every 60,000.

Battery, twice.

General Comments:

This is the second escort I've owned, the first got totaled after 108,000.

I have been very pleased with its reliability, and serviceability.

I'm over 6 feet tall and still have plenty of room, leg and headroom.

1995 Ford Escort LX 1.9

Summary:

Far exceeded the cost

Faults:

My trunk leaked at around 16,000 mile, repaired by dealership with couching.

Radiator started to leak at 80,000 miles, this was repaired at my own cost because it was out of warranty. I feel this is normal ware.

Throughout the life of the car, I replaced the tires and brakes twice. This also seemed to be normal war.

General Comments:

The car had good pick up with the manual transmission.

The only real repairs need to this car where those from general ware and tear. I still had the original muffle on the car at 106,000 miles and six years of use.

This car held up great in a crash that I had with a tractor trailer at 40 mile per hour. I had bumps and bruises. Unfortunately this finally killed my car after some great years.

1995 Ford Escort LX 1.9

Summary:

A waste of money

Faults:

1) Timing belt went at around 85,000

2) Check coolant light malfunctioned

3) Gas Gage sensor malfunctioned

4) Catalytic Converter heat shield fell off at around 15000, then again at 90000

5) A random clanking noise coming from the driver side front tire. Ford Dealership couldn't figure out what it was coming from.

6) The trunk of my hatchback leaked after 1,000 miles. Ford "fixed" it, which lasted until the next time it rained. When I went back to get it looked at for the 2nd time, they said that that was all they could do. They then suggested that I drill holes in the bottom of the wheel well and 2 other places.

General Comments:

Essentially, the only good thing that I have to say about this car is that within about a minute of starting up, both the heat and the air conditioning come up fast enough to the point where its effecting the temperature in the car.

As someone who is over 6 feet tall, there is definitely not enough legroom for anyone who is over about 5 foot 7 inches tall. Including if the seat is pushed all the way back and tilted generously.

The speakers for the stereo sounded OK for about a week.

I've heard a few people talking about how they've owned older models of the escort, and saying how happy they were with it and how many miles they've put on it. If this is true then ford must have thrown their standards out the window when they made the 1995 LX model.

I'd recommend getting the '97 or newer Escort or Tracer.. that was the last Escort design before they stopped making them in 2001. We use them in the rental fleet at my work and they're very reliable cars. They're so solid that some have over 120,000 miles on them and we STILL rent them out to people, confident that we'll have no breakdowns ;)

Timing belt is a MAINTENANCE item...

Heat shields... pretty minor.
