2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V6

Summary:

A Explorer worth exploring

Faults:

At 33,000 miles Tailgate developed stress crack right through the Ford logo. Dealer Replaced entire tailgate.

At 41,000 miles side molding started to separate from vehicle, dealer fixed problem under extended warranty.

At 45,000 miles outside temperature gage began to hallucinate saying it was 156 degrees out when it was barely in the 70's. Dealer kept car for 4 weeks replacing everything computer wise, but then just stated the instrument cluster sensor was defective. Replaced under warranty and luckily I had a loaner car.

General Comments:

This car has been a real trooper for my family carting us around up and down the dirty back roads of the suburbs I live in. Mileage is decent, about 21MPG most of the time. 4WD is a big plus during the winter, and when on dirt roads in the rain.

Whoever designed the interior door features needs to have their head examined. The side pocket pokes out to much and is always pressing to the side of my calf, maybe they designed it for women who typically do not sit with their legs spread apart. Just my opinion.

The controls for the rear vents are at an awkward position, you have to bend down if your tall to look at them.

Car handles well on turns, not like other SUV where you feel you might roll over, Ford actually did a good redesign.

2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4.0L V6

Summary:

A keeper

Faults:

The locking system on the tonneau cover jammed.

General Comments:

Admittedly we bought the "truck" on its good looks, then we were surprised!

The performance is much better than expected, with more power than we need, and the handling ability is a real improvement over our 2 door Sport.

Lots of room inside, for us and the dogs, with features that really help. The sliding 3 way sunroof, and the power rear window gives a convertible feel. Of course it has the usual "Ford doors" that go clunk. A "wow" system, by Pioneer. The pickup box is small, but with the bed extender has proved very useful for carrying lots of tools.

I love this car. I have a 2001 Model and have around 23500 miles on it. I have had absolutely no problems with the car except the Check Engine light came on for an emissions problem. Other than that not a problem ever.

The 4.0L V6 has great power never leaving you struggling to get up to speed. Also the interior is extremely comfortable with a good sound system.

My Sport Trac also has a very good ride to it and handles superbly on Snow especially with the 4 wheel drive.

Overall I must say that the Explorer Sport Trac is a great combination between a Truck and an SUV and so far for me has been a great investment.

2002 Ford Explorer XLS 4.0 Litre

Summary:

Biggest piece of junk I've ever owned

Faults:

Water leaks around the windows are the worst problems. It's been in to the dealer 6 times for the leaks. I also have had it in for suspension squeaks and poor paint on the hood.

General Comments:

I've been very disappointed with the vehicle as a whole. For the price I paid I really expected a higher quality product. It rides and drives good with the new suspension package, but the new body style has caused more problems than it's worth.
