1997 Ford F150 Supercab 4.2 V6

Summary:

Nightmare on Ford Street

Faults:

The truck is on its third engine.

Bolt on this third engine broke putting it currently in the shop to replace the harmonic balancer.

Same night as it was purchased brand new, the truck read "full" but we ran out of gas. The dealer said we had a problem with the gauge being hooked up wrong. They assured us we should keep this particular vehicle and not trade it back.

Seats started wearing immediately.

Brakes wore down to nothing on one half of the shoe and not at all on the other.

Seat belts broke.

Rubber gaskets on door have always fallen off.

Door ajar light always stays on.

Overhead light stays on.

Ford installed alarm system malfunctioned.

Windshield wipers and fluid randomly come on.

Car dies and loses all power whenever it wants, especially around turns leaving you without any control, in particular power-steering.

Lug nuts recalled.

Front engine seal recalled.

Fuel line recalled.

Back tailgate is very difficult to open.

Gas mileage no where near advertised EPA sticker.

Doors sound like they are always open.

General Comments:

This car looks nice and seats six people comfortably, but it was the worst experience of our lives. We feel as if we as consumers were used to test a new vehicle only to help a huge company "iron out its kinks" at our expense, not theirs.

Don't you know, don't buy a V-6 in a full size truck MAN! They build them cheap cause they know if you're going to buy a fullsize truck with a V-6 in it, you're trying to go the cheap way so they build them cheap. If you look at the surveys, most of the bad ones have the V-6 Ford, Chevy or Dodge, it don't matter, don't buy a V-6 in a full size truck, my uncle made the same mistake with a GMC buying a V-6 in a fullsize truck.

Summary:

A disappointment

Faults:

Loss of power tapping and knocking in the engine, possibly rocker arms or push rods loose, antifreeze, metal shavings in the oil pan, just things that shouldn't be wrong with it at 52000 miles.

General Comments:

It's a nice truck, but lacks the performance it had.

Sounds like your truck has the same amount of miles on it as mine 110,000kms

I feel for you, I can't drive mine safely so it sits in the carport, where it must sit unless I want it to get wet inside and smell musty for months afterwards. It is a shame that myself being a true loyal Ford driver for years is now going to look into a Honda or Toyota. What is the point in making a truck that people cannot drive without worrying about all the noises and leaks and things? Ford your going to have to improve if you want to stay on top. One main reason I have bought Ford most of my life is because they used to run forever. My 77 F250 4x4 gave me close to 30 years of dependable service, needing another truck to replace that one I bought this one with "low" kms. Now I know why it was cheaper than the rest of the nice looking trucks on the lot that weekend. I am embarrassed that this has come to this, as I did so well and used to brag about how great my last truck from Ford was. It is truly sad, I will go buy a toyota and pay the extra money knowing it is going to be something I can brag about again.

The thing had 100,000 on it when you bought it, you just got screwed, it sounds like it hasn't been taken very good care of by the previous owner. You just got screwed plain and simple, buy an F-150 that ain't worn out. When you get it, don't buy one with a V-6 in it, get a V-8 in it cause the V-6 is crap when it's brand new.
