1988 Ford Taurus LX 3.8 liter V6

Summary:

Its OK if you haul a lot of kids or take a lot of trips

Faults:

The starter went out right after we bought it. We've had to replace it twice since then.

The thermostat stuck closed and blew the upper radiator hose and the radiator itself.

The heater core went out and took all day to replace because you have to tear the whole dashboard apart to get to it. While fixing that I blew up the A/C so now I have to fix that.

Got the key stuck in the ignition on the side of the road with my pregnant girlfriend in the car.

The interior of the car is falling apart (great pleather upholstery).

I spent 4 months trying to fix the heater controls (I have finally given up on the awful buzzing sound) tore the dash out numerous times.

General Comments:

It's a great road trip car, but around town it gets awful gas mileage (it averages about 14 mpg).

Although the interior is falling apart the seats are still very comfortable.

It also makes a very good car if you have to transport a lot of kids.

1988 Ford Taurus GL 3.8

Summary:

A non-reliable waste of money, and the trash of Ford

Faults:

Head Gasket has leak, and needs to be fixed.

Transmission shutters, and is slow shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Steering has a lot of play in it.

Car runs very hot all of the time.

A/C system has large leak in it.

Speakers have been replaced.

Electronic solenoid for the heat/ac only works in the high position.

General Comments:

I refuse to fix anything wrong with this car. It had low miles when I bought it. I did not now that it had the recalls for the transmission, and the head gasket, till it was to late. I would not recommend this car to anyone, especially with the 3.8 liter engine. The car does have a lot of power yet the reliability of the car is not worth the troubles. This car runs at very high temps. If you go buy a thermostat for it, its even a high-temp thermostat. That is not good for the transmission which is one of the hottest components on the car, nor the engine being that hot either. All in all, this car is not worth anyones time or money in my opinion, and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Why the heck did you refuse to fix it? That's one of the things about having a car, you HAVE to check things to make sure everything is in working order. If you think something is wrong or if your car starts acting funny, you'll need to get it looked at right away before bigger problems start to arise. You'll be thankful you did...

1988 Ford Taurus LX 3.8 V6

Summary:

The best older car on the road still

Faults:

Replaced head gaskets at 150,102 miles.

Regular maintanance. It will pull us out of any trouble we can get into.

General Comments:

The most comfortable car we have ever had.

Very dependable, especially for its age and its mileage.

The 3.8 V6 is powerful enough.

Easiest thing to work on, besides the old cars.

It has tons of trunk space.

This car looks very good.

One of the roomiest cars in the family.

1988 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 litre 12v V6

Summary:

A well equipped car for the money

Faults:

Constant velocity joints, water pump had to be replaced at 123000 kilometres.

Rear struts/springs failed at 140000 kms

Heater core failed 146000 kms

Constant coolant system problems, such as blown heater hoses plagued the car for as long as I owned the car.

Pump for washer fluid failed twice.

Tie Rod ends dangerously loose, replaced at 160 000 k's.

Brakes and rotors replaced, usual wear and tear.

Chronic corrosion problem below gas filler cap, repaired twice, seems to be a common problem.

General Comments:

A roomy, comfortably riding sedan, great for hauling around a bunch of college students.

Adequate performance with the V6, although slow down shifting on expressway on ramps is a bit frightening if you're not used to it.

Handles well for a car this size, better than most mid sized cars I have driven. Handled snow and ice well, but the tail had a tendency to slide around corners if you're not careful.

Not the cheapest car to maintain, with relatively high fuel consumption, frequent repairs etc. Don't buy this car without some mechanical knowledge, money set aside for costly repair work.

A decent first car.
