1993 Geo Storm

Summary:

Great for price and looks

Faults:

We had to get a new compressor when we first bought the car. The steering shakes at times. Little things inside the car can break easily. The car will make weird noises when you turn sometimes.

General Comments:

This car is one of the best looking ones I've seen for it's cost and style. I enjoy riding in it and how easy it is to drive. The backseat is quite small and hard to get in and out of. The only thing that could make this car better is a different engine. It wouldn't matter what kind long as Izuzu didn't make it. The manufacturers should have worked harder on the engine, because this car is pretty hot!

1993 Geo Storm Base

Summary:

Fun, but not worth the hassle

Faults:

I replaced all four struts in 2000.

The ignition switch went out on me twice within a couple of months.

The first week I had the car (bought it brand new from the dealer), the transmission went out on me. It wouldn't go into first gear.

New exhaust (not muffler) in 2001.

I have had the brakes done twice.

Filled the freon in 2001.

General Comments:

I have a love/hate relationship with my Storm. It has been reliable, yet there are so many things I would change if I had designed and manufactured this car myself.

I know it sounds trivial, but I hate the fact that there is no place to put a drink. None of the cup holders you can buy work because the padding at the bottom of the window is too thick, and I can't count how many times I have spilled something trying to wedge it between the seat and the emergency break.

Forget about having acceleration with the air conditioning on-it's horribly bogged down with it on.

The back seat is way to small and very difficult if you have a car seat. There is no way to put the car seat in the middle, so my daughter has to ride on one side and this makes me nervous if there was a side impact on her side of the car.

The rust is horrible.

The car is difficult to unlock in the winter.

The heat/air conditioning works great.

Pretty good stereo system.

The on/off/volume knob broke three times on me before my fiance replaced it with another vehicle model's.

The accelerator, break and clutch are positioned weird. If I move close enough to depress the clutch properly I am too close to the accelerator.

Definitely NOT a winter car. It does not like snow that is more than a few inches deep and seems to handle poorly.

Yeah, I agree with you both. The Storm was never meant for a family. I had a 93 Storm. Yes, the radio knobs broke on me too, and considering that I couldn't fit any human being in my back seat, I completely took out the stock radio and installed a CD player and replaced my back seat with a custom box holding 2 15" subs. I really can't complain about the storm though. It was very reliable while I had it. Hated to see it go. I am now the proud owner of a 90 Eagle Talon TSI AWD Turbo. Much faster than the Geo. Oh yeah, I really got tired of explaining to people how to open the doors... how about ya'll???

1993 Geo Storm 1.6

Summary:

Horrible exhaust system from front to back

Faults:

Where do I start? Despite taking very good care of this car (everything, not just oil changes), it has a good deal of issues. It's been through too many to even list, from struts at 40,000, brakes countless times, but the biggies are a dead AC each year, radio backlights out, leaking oil at the gasket above the transmission, leaking radiator fluid from who knows where, low power, frozen door locks when the temp goes below 32 each and everytime, despite constant lubrication and the worst... the cracked manifold at 60,000 (I was told this is a problem with all Storms).

Oh, and the body is rusting badly already.

General Comments:

The car itself has a decent cockpit, is fun to drive when it's working properly and is good on gas. They should have kept the line, but put a Toyota engine in it instead of the Izuzu one.

I own a 1990 Geo Storm Sport. I am the second owner. I've owned it for 3 years and it has 208,000 miles.

My exhaust manifold has gotten so hot that the oxygen sensor hole was oval not round, and the warm-up converter that bolts onto the manifold has gotten so brittle it is absolutely crumbling away.

I am a 45 year old woman, and I work on my own car. I have found that my car is very easy to work on, it has paid for itself over and over again as I work bail bond service so I travel everywhere there is a jail, and Yes, despite the expensive cost of just these 2 parts, I would buy another Geo Storm Sport.

My timing belt broke today, first time it broke down on me, I just figure it's getting tired and I need to take it slower and easier.

I was disappointed at first that the engine was a Isuzu engine and not of an American made engine, but it has turned out to be a really good engine and car!

Thanks,

I had to replace the exhaust manifold all the way to the exhaust pipe tip. Everything has rotted away. Once you get one hole fixed with a new part, the one next to it goes, so on and so on.
