2000 GMC Jimmy SLE 4.3 V6

Summary:

Not so bad if you like to do repairs

Faults:

Some of the things that have gone wrong so far.

Fuel pump at 105,000 miles, replaced myself for 250.00.

Injectors at 110,000 miles repaired myself for 225.00.

Heater wasn't working, heater core cleaned out for 100.00.

Turn signal noise constantly goes off.

Vehicle shutters badly at high speeds.

I think the radiator is going to pop soon. Cat is starting to go too.

General Comments:

I like the interior of this car and it is good for long trips, but believe that it is poorly engineered. I think that as long as you properly maintain the car, you shouldn't have as many problems, minus the wheel bearings that everyone else has had to replace.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone. I was lucky being a mechanic and was able to do my own repairs.

2000 GMC Jimmy 4.3 Litre V6 Vortec

Summary:

I love it; it hasn't failed me yet.

Faults:

Signal timer makes weird ticking signal noises occasionally, but doesn't affect the signal lights.

General Comments:

The best thing I've bought so far. I love it, it handles great, has a torquey little engine, and isn't bad on gas (for an SUV). My black rims also complement it beautifully. An all-round great truck.

2000 GMC Jimmy SLS 4.3L

Summary:

Excellent value true off-roading and tow-capable SUV!

Faults:

Had front 'clunk' fixed in accordance with tech bulletin on it.

Front right wheel-bearing at 130K

Routine brake job at 146k

Replaced ball-joint and tie-rod at 154k

Water sometimes leaks into passenger floor when AC is on for an extended period in very hot weather (not a big deal in Canada!). There is a tech bulletin on this I have not implemented yet.

Rear defrost cable detached from windshield (easy re-solder fix I did myself)

General Comments:

Considering this SUV was purchased very cheap as a 6 year old used car with 112k km (66k miles) and now has 174k km (110k miles), I have been extremely and pleasantly surprised with its reliability.

I have towed a 3000lb travel trailer each summer (06, 07, 08) for a total of over 11k km (7k miles). It tows excellent. No need for fancy sway controls or weight balancing hitches.

On flat roads staying under 95km/hour I can get mileage of 14L/100km hwy towing a 3000lb trailer (seriously)!

It handles well in snow in 4x4. It off-roads well (yes, I actually off-road for fun).

Fuel mileage is acceptable provided you drive it well: 10L/100km hwy, 15L/100km city, 13L/100km mix. Drive like a NASCAR driver and you'll get 15L/100km combined!

Parts are very inexpensive and always easy to find.

Squeaks and rattles a bit more than some would like, doesn't bother me. Considering how I off-road it, I'm sure other foreign SUVs would squeak/rattle here and there too after I was done with them :-)

If I add up everything I spent on this car in 2.5 years including purchase price + tires, + maintenance etc. (but not gas as that cancels out) it still comes up LESS than just purchase price alone of a comparable 2000 Toyota Forerunner or Nissan Pathfinder would have cost me back in 2006.

The Jimmy has been just as reliable.

The drive train on these is OK, but you are right about the rattles; oh my, they are terrible enough that I sold it after 6 months and bought a Nissan Pathfinder.

2000 GMC Jimmy 4 door 4WD 4.1

Summary:

I would sum it up in one word - junk!!!

Faults:

The entire front end had to be replaced.

The ball joints were replaced three times.

The steering box went.

Gas sending unit went.

Door pins had to be replaced twice.

Door weather striping had to be replaced on all doors, and it still leaks.

Torsion bar from the front toward back went.

Many of the electronic ignition parts needed to be replaced. One had to be replaced twice.

Emergency brake cable went.

The front end is all new and aligned, steering box new, however, it's all over the road, and you have to over compensate on the wheel to keep the car in the lane.

The most expensive repair vehicle I have ever owned, and I would not recommend anyone to purchase one.

General Comments:

The car is all over the road, even though the front end is all new as well as the steering box.

Has anyone had these issues???
