1985 Honda Accord DX 1.8L

Summary:

Fun, cheap, comfortable, and reliable!

Faults:

The radiator, timing belt, and CV joints all had to be replaced at various times. This was consistent with normal wear and tear.

The body was beginning to show signs of rust when I purchased it, but did not accelerate or advance so much over the 3 years I owned it.

General Comments:

My previous car was an 84 Accord hatchback, and I sold it due to extremely high mileage and advanced rust, only to purchase this car. I no longer have this car due to an accident with a drunk driver (no injuries). I will miss it for it was fun, and reliable!

I cannot say enough good about these cars, between the 2 of them I drove almost 100,000 miles.

Outside of routine suggested maintenance, all I did was change the oil every 3,000 miles. Just keep on top of the maintenance and they are great!

These cars were always predictable and never left me stranded. A GREAT value for a older used car.

1985 Honda Accord LXi 1.8L

Summary:

Good first car for teen

Faults:

Vacuum Leak at 250,000

Other than that, all regular maintenance.

General Comments:

This car is awesome. Bought it for $900, and it is incredible. Never replaced clutch or had any major problems with it. It still has enough power to burn out, and the assisted variable power steering is also very technologically advanced for an 86. One bad thing- 86 was the first year Accords had Electronic Fuel Injection, so the engine has a few rough edges, so examine carefully.

You said 1985 was the first year for Accords fuel injected. I have a carbeurated 1985 Sedan. But I believe the 1985 Se-i has fuel injection.

1985 Honda Accord SE-i 1.8

Summary:

Get the fuel injected SE-i. Just keeps running!

Faults:

Rack and Pinion (very expensive to replace)

Fuel Pump

Brakes (Total rebuild of fronts, leaky rear cylinders)

Sunroof leaks

Sunroof switch unreliable

Faulty brake light dash sensor

Air Conditioning not working

Stock Radio (wiring problem, Cassette failure)

Leather seats (many tears)

General Comments:

Car was bought off mechanic, who let the car sit for several years. Brake rotors and rack and pinion were very expensive. No rust, but the sunroof leaks like a... Beyond that, the car just keeps running. Car has been used for short commuting, which just killed the Mustang. The SE-i has no complaints over the short distances it drives each day. Good car for reliable daily transportation. Fuel injection definite improvement over the two previous carburetor versions of Accords I have had. SE-i Fuel Injected engine gives more power than the LX engine!

1985 Honda Accord LX Hatchback 1.8 3BBL 4 cylinder

Summary:

A nice, well oiled machine!

Faults:

Replaced the clutch when I first bought it, and that was the first time it was replaced.

A 65 amp fuse burns out often (in the fusebox under the hood, next to the colorful fuses) :)

Second, starter died at 210,000 miles. First time the starter was replaced. Starter was easy to replace.

Soon after the starter went out, the alternator went bad. Inside, the battery light came on as the indicator. Alternator was a mother to replace.

General Comments:

This is a very, very reliable car. Everything I replaced was an old part and was the first time it ever broke. I wore and tore the car badly. It's a peppy little car as a stick shift and can take on new Escort ZX2s (Accord is all stock).

The car handles very well with good tires, and is loose with general weather tires, as there is no tilt to the car during turns.

This model (1984 and 1985 Accords) has very few, if any, performance parts. If you are looking to hop it up, I recommend a new engine from a newer car. I did happen to find body stylings from Vestatec at www.classicgarage.com! Very nice indeed.

I would recommend this car to anyone because this car looks decent, is peppy and handles well high as well as lowered.

One simple hint for the alternator, take off the oil filter and take out the drive axle, because you have to go under the car.

One last statement, if you keep the EGR valve in decent condition, you will NEVER EVER hear or feel a back fire from this car!
