1992 Honda Accord LX 2.2L

Summary:

Excellent high miles used car for students

Faults:

"Main relay" would fail during summer months after 13 years of use. It is a known problem with this model. During summer, the relay expands and fails. Car would not start for a while and when temp cools, starts again. Had to replace main relay ($80 parts+ labor).

Radiator hose cracked and leaked the fluid while driving at 165000 miles. Had to replace the hose. Minor cost.

Oil pan gasket needs to be replaced every year or two.

Nothing major otherwise.

General Comments:

Like the most reviews here, my experience with this model has been excellent. It is very reliable and gives minimal or no problems for a daily driver. It is easy and cheap to maintain. Does not burn oil at all.

My car has everything original, and everything works. Power windows, mirrors, locks functioning. It had passed California smog check with flying colors every time. The last time I was at the smog station with 193000 miles, the tech was apprehensive, but after the check he was impressed.

Even at this old age my Accord 92 drives so well that I do not hesitate to drive long distances on this car. I have done nonstop 250 miles drive on it recently. It is driven almost daily at 70 to 80 mph in SoCal highway traffic.

Overall, a great experience.

1992 Honda Accord EX 2.2

Summary:

Good, but maintenance intensive

Faults:

Distributor.

Brake master cylinder.

Upper and lower ball joints.

Wheel bearing.

Brakes - pads, rotors, calipers front and back.

Replaced timing belt.

Replaced clutch.

Now the thermostat.

Windows go down slow when it's cold out.

General Comments:

Bought the car at 197,000, and had to replace all that crap, because it was just wore out. My son might have had something to do with some of it. He beats the crap out of it.

Still runs like a top after all those repairs (and we did some of it). I'm going to drive it till the bumper rusts off.

1992 Honda Accord LX 2.0

Summary:

Best car I have ever had

Faults:

All the routine fluid changes have been done per the owners manual and mileage schedule.

I had to replace the radiator at 130,000 miles due to a small crack near the cap. Also replaced the timing belt and drive belts for the AC and power steering.

Replaced plug distributor and rotor at 140.000 miles.

Also have the left side CV joint replaced.

Had a leaking valve cover gasket that I replaced at 150,000. Also had to replace the counter balance shaft seal. Old seal failed and I lost all the engine oil.

Changed the original fuel filter at 150,000, and shortly after had to change the right CV half shaft.

At 165,000 miles I have to replace the exhaust system from the manifold back. The car had the original flex pipe and cat converter.

Replace the power antenna at 170,000.

I drive my car to work each day, distance to and from work is 184 miles per day and the Accord still get 29-30 miles per gallon.

General Comments:

The car still gets great gas mileage.

The body and undercarriage are in wonderful shape. The car was undercoated by the original owners.

The interior is a bit loud as some of the window stripping needs replaced.

If I could find another 1992 Accord with 100,000 miles, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

1992 Honda Accord EX 2.0

Summary:

Best year for the Accord

Faults:

Replacing different components:

Alternator.

Rear end collision.

General Comments:

I loved this car dearly and I miss it.

It was my first car.

It was great how the back windows rolled ALL THE WAY DOWN rather than a miserable few inches.

It was a 5 speed stick shift and shifted nicely.

My friends had fun driving it when I lent it to them. The arm rests were very comfortable for passengers.

The trunk was very spacious.

Although a sedan, it handled like a sports car.

I wrecked it and replaced it with a 1994 Honda Accord EX. It had none of the above qualities. In fact the 1994 model is even worse and less convenient!

This goes to show that new doesn't always equal better.

"It was great how the back windows rolled ALL THE WAY DOWN rather than a miserable few inches."

For some stretch of years, there was a federal regulation that required rear car windows could not roll down far enough to potentially let a child crawl out. I guess they decided that was solving a problem that did not really exist, because that regulation has gone away. Many new cars have rear windows that roll all the way down now.
