1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.5L

Summary:

Gotta love it

Faults:

Throttle body needed cleaning, dealer failed to clean.

Shift on the fly inoperable, probably dirty sensor.

Dealer mechanic failed to install a vacuum hose correctly - caused months and several dealers to resolve, it was hard to find, but a smoke test found it.

Chatter in the rear when first accelerating, kind of a grabbing effect. Only when from a dead stop and then slips on acceleration.

Don't use MP3 CD's. Changer broke.

General Comments:

All in all, poor maintenance by the dealer is the biggest problem. I love this truck. Just wish I could find a good mechanic.

Yeah I know it takes a quart of oil; get over it.

Love the sun roof, biggest I've ever seen.

Original owner.

1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.5

Summary:

This is a good car

Faults:

Burns the 1 quart in 1000 Km.

I had the Err3 on my 6 CD changer. I found that if I pressed the eject button for the last CD that played, and then popped the CD player on the bottom - where the ashtray is - that the CD popped out and the unit returned to working. I had to keep popping the unit until it got to the point where it was suppose to eject. That spot takes quite a while. If you do not know which was the last CD that played - then try this on each of the CDs. One of them is hung up - I think!

General Comments:

I like the car overall.

1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.5 liter

Summary:

HORRIBLE

Faults:

Terrible car. Dealer won't acknowledge any engine malfunction with this model. Consumes a tremendous amount of oil. You will burn up your engine if you don't constantly check your oil level. Nothing fixes this. Not synthetic oil, oil flushes, etc. Terrible gas mileage 10-11 miles per gallon. Very weak air conditioner.

DON'T BUY ONE!!!

You might find a really great looking vehicle with very low miles for a good price. Pass it up. It more than likely is a lemon. Look at the tail pipe, its probably black with excess burned oil.

Look for Toyota, Nissan, or Chevy trucks.

1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.5

Summary:

A worthless piece of junk

Faults:

Extraordinarily oil consumption.

Spun bearings.

Bent rods and valves.

Three mechanics looked at the truck and told us we did nothing wrong to contribute to the failure of the engine. In fact one mechanic indicated the engine was as clean as a whistle due to the on time oil changes and maintenance. I can understand a neglected car giving out, but one that was well taken care of makes no sense.

The only trouble this truck has ever given us is that it requires a new engine. WOW! I will never buy another Isuzu product, nor will I recommend one to anyone.

I wish I had never bought one, and now I cannot get rid of this one, still making payments, and it won't be worth trading in.

I have no choice but to fix it, and keep it. I will have invested too much money not to keep it.

No more Troopers in production, wonder WHY???

General Comments:

The engine only lasted 107,000 miles.

Entire engine needs to be replaced.

1999 Isuzu Trooper s 3.5 liter V6

Summary:

This car has been dependable when I've really needed a dependable car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong.

General Comments:

This car has been a dream.

The only down side is that I'm only getting 13 mpg.

It sounds and starts like a new vehicle.

This has been by far the best car I have owned.

I wish they still made them.

I had been getting a different car every year.

I just can't get rid of such a great car.

I have driven it form L.A. to Philly four times.

1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.5 liter

Summary:

I would not buy another Isuzu if my life depended on it!

Faults:

When I first bought the vehicle everything ran great. I had been looking into a pre-owned car and decided to buy my fathers 1999 Isuzu trooper because it had minimal problems in the past and was well taken care of.

Everything seemed great with the car aside from the massive oil consumption (which from research on the troopers I noticed that it was a common complaint from other owners as well.)

After about 85,000 miles with regular scheduled oil changes, tune ups, etc I started having problem after problem.

First, the axle and the brakes went out at the same time. When I took it to the shop to have it fixed I was left with close to a $3000 bill.

About two weeks after that labor was completed I was driving back from a friends house when I heard a loud noise and my car completely shut down. After having it towed the dealership told me that it would need a new engine. When I started looking for a used or re-manufactured engine I realized that I was not going to be able to find a used one that was under $3,000 or a re-manufactured for under about $5,000. That's not even including the $2000 to put the engine into the car. I decided to bite the bullet and just fix the car because I was still making payments on it.

I found a 50,000 mile engine for about $3,000 so I purchased it. The engine was sent to the dealership and they put it in the car (after they fixed all of the other problems on the "New" used engine that I had purchased.)

After everything was fixed I was ecstatic to finally be able to drive my truck again. No more than 24 hours after I had picked the truck up from the shop anti-freeze started leaking. The next day I took it back to the dealership and they informed me that I would need to replace the radiator (that cost about $500.) So I replaced it. After my truck was in the shop for a few more days I picked it back up.

Happy that my car problems were finally over I continued to drive my car for about two weeks when I was driving one day and my car started making a loud noise, so I had it towed to the dealership again. After they took a look at the truck again they informed me that I would need yet another engine.

Long comes to short I have a useless 1999 playground in my back yard and I was forced to buy a 1992 Buick until I figure out what to do with the Trooper. I would not recommend that anyone looking for a pre-owned SUV even consider purchasing a 1999 Trooper.

Did you ever learn what caused both of the engines to quit? Having the axles and brakes rebuilt around 85,000 miles isn't really unreasonable. However, paying $3,000 to have that done IS unreasonable. I think that's about double what it should have been. Too bad you got sucked in deeper--in for a penny, in for a pound, I guess. I can see wanting to pay for a new engine in order to get your money's worth from the freshly rebuilt axles, but again, $5,000 for a remanufactured engine, plus another $2,000 to install it--totally ridiculous! You should have been able to get a remanufactured engine for $3,000, or could have gotten yours rebuilt for about $1,000. You should have pulled the plug at that point, regardless of the new axles. It seems that whoever your mechanic was liked to charge about exactly double what he should have.
