1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.6

Summary:

Good buy

Faults:

Had to replace the transmission at 206,000 miles, but that was to be expected at such high miles.

General Comments:

Good vehicle, got a lot of riding pleasure out of it before the transmission went out, but very reliable SUV.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 straight six

Summary:

Very reliable and capable vehicle even with high miles

Faults:

Rear wiper motor around 120,000 miles.

Rear axle bearings went out around 100,000 miles like most grand Cherokee's around this year.

Replaced front axle U-Joints around 130,000.

Small leak in the AC, I had to charge it up every summer to have cold air.

Front anti-sway bar links had to be replaced around 130,000 miles. (It started clunking pretty loud in the front end over bumps)

General Comments:

This has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. It's been my daily driver for 5 years and I can't really complain about anything. It's comfortable, not too big and not too small, and with it being 4wd it does great in the Michigan winters.

The 4.0 straight six engine has enough power, but it is no thrill ride and the gas mileage is not that great at about 17 mpg. This is a combination of about 60% city and 40% highway. The engine at over 160,000 miles still runs like new and doesn't burn or leak any oil.

Overall this has been a great vehicle, other than the rear end needing to be rebuilt at 100,000 miles it has just needed a few minor repairs over the last few years.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L I6

Summary:

Love 'em

Faults:

Catalytic converter.

Front right caliper seized.

Hatch hydraulics weakened.

General Comments:

I accidently ran into a curb straight on at 50 mph and the alignment stayed perfect.

I treated it as if it was stolen for the whole time I had it, and it still ran quiet as can be and smooth with ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY THOUSAND MILES PLUS. I would feel as safe as a baby if I had chose to drive across the country with it having 200k on the odometer.

I've know many owners of Jeeps, both sport models and Grand Laredos. ALL HAVE MADE IT 200K on the odometer with no issues other than water pumps or belts cracking; minor repairs that are not even worth mentioning.

If you are reading this because you are looking to buy one... I suggest you erase all doubt!!! I am mechanically inclined and see Chrysler's Jeeps as durable as Hondas. That says a lot regardless if you like imports or not.

GET ONE... LOVE IT...

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder

Summary:

Do not buy this vehicle unless you have disposable income

Faults:

Brake Light sensor never worked. Always says the brake lights are out, even when they work.

Occasionally the right brake light will stop working. I replaced it 3 times in 6 months and then just gave up, because it would work when put into the left. Mechanic has no explanation.

Interior lights dim when hitting the brakes. Mechanic unable to find source of problem.

Stereo has an bug in it. None of the buttons control what they are supposed to. You hit preset 1 and it changes to preset 5. You skip track on a cd and it changes to am radio. Mechanic cannot find source of problem.

Driver side door needed to be replaced 90K. The metal on the door where the locking device bolts in cracked like a tin can. Entire door needs replacing. $1900 dollars for a used door to have it matched because I couldn't find replacement in the right color. The dealer says it's not a MFG defect, but the same thing happened to my bosses Cherokee in the third year of ownership and the factory warrantied it; however, Jeep told me it's never happened before. I eventually had to have a body shop guy cut out the locking mechanism and re-weld the door. It was 1K as opposed to 2K. Not a cheap fix.

Some random solenoid broke cost $500.00 mechanic said it was the third one on a Jeep he fixed that week.

The seats are very uncomfortable. Not good for long road trips or a sales job where lots of time is spent in vehicle.

The rear hatch never stayed open. Have to hold it up with a golf club.

General Comments:

The car has been a money pit. The door breaking is absolutely unacceptable and the final straw. I just hope I can sell the stupid thing before the tranny fails. After all the reviews I've read, I fear that is the next problem.

I have all the same complaints hundreds of other people have, every review I read lists the same things. I wish Jeep would issue recalls and fix the problems with their vehicles as they are clearly not isolated issues. I found the Manufacturer's response to be lacking.

You ain't kidding that the 1995 jeep laredo is a money pit... My drivers side door just broke, door lock mechanism, broke right off, have to replace the whole thing... Replaced the catalytic converter three times, working on a forth... Whole muffler system needs replacing... Entire AC system went, thank god at the time it was under recall.. Now AC leaks inside of vehicle, least of my worries... Constant brake work. Last, but not least tranny starting to slip... Time to put this vehicle out of its misery...
