1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0 V6

Summary:

A high Maintenance Cheap Vehicle

Faults:

The Fuel Pump Failed. I suspect its the lining from Chrysler's faulty gas tank, many people have had the same problem. In the late 90's Chrysler put a liner in their fuel tanks that deteriorates or dissolves after prolonged contact with gasoline. The sludge that results ruins the fuel pump and the fuel pump eventually fails. Chrysler has refused to help, and the cost is more than $500.

The A/C just stopped cooling the dealer wants 1200 to repair it.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited: After 153,000 miles I experienced the same problem with Fuel Pumps going bad. Have just found out about the FAULTY fuel tank and this is after FOUR fuel pumps, inside of the next 20,000 miles at three different dealers in different states. That is ridiculous. Chrysler should make good on this, but they refuse. Although I love this vehicle, I won't buy another Jeep because of the way Chrysler handles problems; they don't handle them at all!

I bought my 1997 Grand Cherokee Laredo used with approximately 51,000 miles on the odometer. I consider it a good buy for what you get. I have a couple of complaints, though. Since I acquired the vehicle I have had a problem with engaging the 'Cruise Control' button. I have to click it a few times before it engages, and the same thing happens when disengaging. It won't till I click it several times. I have found out through time that other owners have had the same problem. It hasn't been a safety issue because I have gotten used to clicking the 'Cancel' button on the right side of the steering wheel spoke or stepping on the brake pedal. Plus, the transmission has had a slight 'glitch' for a long time. As I start off with a cold vehicle, the gears will not upshift past 2nd gear till I have driven it a couple of miles. After that, no more problem during the day. I also have become aware that the Cherokee's transmission leave to be desired. All in all, would I buy another one? Sure I would!

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0

Summary:

Good Tough 4x4

Faults:

I had to get the carbon cleaned out of my exhaust.

Front and rear brake pads at 60,000 miles, but the back rotors were totally rusted.

Some problems with road noise from the rear, some tell me its the rear axle. Dealer said will have to replace rear axle within a 1,000 miles.

General Comments:

This Jeep has been pretty good overall, but could cheapen the parts to fix it.

Gas Mileage improvement might be a good thing to think about in the future.

It's a tough 4x4 off road, very dependable.

Chrysler replaced my rear axle under warranty. It was absolutely no surprise to the dealership, because they had replaced several in 1997 models. I suspect that there was a bad batch, and some held out longer than others. Mine had only done 20,000, but I towed a trailer during that time.

Check the TSBs, search the web and talk to your dealer about this. I suspect it is a "secret recall"; you might get Chrysler to cover some of the costs even if you are out of warranty.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee LIMITED 5.3,

Summary:

A slap in the face

Faults:

This Jeep is a full time four wheel drive as of tonight I am preparing to replace both front axles, front pinion gear, diff seal, viscus coupling, chain drive in the T-case. From the dealer 2200 dollars. From the junkyard 600 dollars. Thank you jeep for a very merry Christmas.

As for the rest. I have to much to list

But my current running total is 7234.98.

General Comments:

When asked if I would ever buy another jeep again the answer is no. I won't even by another Chrysler product for the remander of my life.

Jeep is a legendary product that carried my grandfather in to battle accross the world. Now Their children are abusing that tradition by turning out overpriced garbage.

If you won't to hear something good about this truck the only thing I can say is at least it is popular enough to pawn off on someone else.
