1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado 5.2L

Summary:

Grand Cherokee is just grand for grad student

Faults:

Electrical problems with interior lights and the center rear brake light at 73, 200 miles.

Two batteries replaced in four years.

Front bumper paint oxidation.

Automatic door locks need replacement.

General Comments:

V-8, 5.2 L engine is fast, uses lots of gas, and has lots of pick up. Love driving the car and it looks good. Best seats for long drives. Air conditioning excellent for deserts of Arizona. Factory stereo system with high end speakers are not impressive. The CD-radio combo is adequate, not great. 2WD is fine for street driving and some rural roads. Save 4x4 for snow and sleet, but in desert, it's not worth it.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition V6

Summary:

I have no major complaints

Faults:

The Infinity Gold Speakers have blown.

The rotors have been replaced several times.

The gas mileage is not as good as it should be for the v6. We also own a v8 which gets the same or sometimes better gas mileage than the v6. We bought the v6 solely for the purpose of better gas mileage!

The original tires did not wear well. I have since put Michelin tires on it and I love the ride!

General Comments:

I like the ride. I like the select-trac 4wheel drive option rather than all wheel drive.

The interior looks like new.

You don't have a "V6"... Your Jeep is an inline 6.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee TSi I-6

Summary:

It was the best

Faults:

The crankshaft pulley separated at 55,000 resulting in a $400 repair. Recalled for Transmission shift lock. Selec-track four wheel drive transfer case started leaking and acted like it was in 4full all the time. Excessive tire wear.

General Comments:

This was a very comfortable and reliable car. I had test driven every SUV before this purchase and loved the Jeep. The last act of this Jeep performed was deploying the air-bags and protecting me from certain death. Jeep didn't survive this crash.

I was so happy with this Grand, that I bought a 2004 as it's replacement. Would love to have my 98 back in it's pre-crash condition.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4wd 4.0 L6

Summary:

Jeep can do better than this.

Faults:

The front brake rotors warped at 50k miles.

Two transfer case seals leaked at 55k miles.

Cloth driver's seat foam wearing out (I only weigh 150 lbs)

A/C clutch worn out at 76k miles.

Rear pinion bearing failed at 76k miles.

General Comments:

The 4.0l 6 cylinder Laredo is a decent vehicle, but acceleration is slow with the auto trans.

Using synthetic motor oil and trans fluid, I managed a combined 20 MPG.

I replaced the OEM shocks with Edelbrock IAS and, despite the cheap General tires, made the JGC stick much better on freeway on/off ramps.

I replaced the front brake rotors with drilled versions and better pads.

The body/hardware held up well.

I purposely bought the last year of that body style, hoping Jeep worked out the bugs beforehand. For the most part, I didn't experience many of the problems others have, but sold the JGC to CarMax instead of shelling out the $$$ for the rearend work.

Go for an original Cherokee they are amazing!! At least my 93 is.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo I6 4.0

Faults:

I have had my Jeep for about 3 years now and I love it! I haven't had any major mechanical problems so far except for one.

A/C compressor went out twice.

Front passenger side floor wet.

Transmission shifts rough at low speeds.

Sometimes, not always, electric shock when exiting the vehicle.

Weather stripping wear down on the front and rear door of driver's side.

Handbrake does not perform like it should in drive, only in reverse. Needs adjusting?

Alternator went out once.

General Comments:

I plan on keeping my Jeep forever. It is very reliable. For being a 2WD model, it's gotten me out of some serious (here in Texas) mud.

Great vehicle for traveling and off road.

It gets the best of both worlds!
