1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L V8

Summary:

The car really is crap! Stay away from it!

Faults:

First off I bought the car to go off road with the new quadra-drive 4wd system in it. The first time I took it off-road the car got stuck. It would not move (the transfer case in the 4bi broke).

The brakes are excellent. Just the sudden jolt after you stop (had to be taken in twice). Drive line had to be replaced.

Had to replace the rear folding seat because it would not latch into place when you would put the seat back to normal.

General Comments:

The acceleration of this car is awesome! I never had a car that was this fast.

Have to quench its thirst for gas every three days.

Very comfortable. The leather seats are glove soft.

Enough luxury features to rival a Lexus.

Go anywhere do anything 4X4 (except for that one time).

Great redesign!

Currently Own a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Thank God I bought an extended warranty or I would be in the poor house now! The only thing I regret is trading in my 93 Lexus Es300 for this piece of junk, please do not compare the Lexus to a Jeep as the leather, and woodgrain in the Jeep look so cheap and are. Toyota/ Lexus make excellent reliable vehicles and as soon as I pay my Jeep off enough I will return to them! For when I traded the 93 Lexus I still received a $8500 trade in value.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V6

Summary:

Too high priced for what you get!

Faults:

At 4000 miles the brakes started grabbing to the left and stuttering badly when stopping. Especially noticeable when exiting from the freeway. The service manager at Jeep told me (rudely I will add) it was a known problem, the brake rotors were not quite heavy duty enough for the weight of the vehicle, but the only thing they would do for me is turn the front rotors once before it reached 9000 miles.

After that-NO WARRANTY-no matter what, on the brakes. I went to a known professional brake shop and had the rotors turned. They were quite warped. After several more thousand miles the same trouble started again. I had the rotors turned again. At 30,000 miles after enduring bad braking more often than not for the life of the vehicle, I had new heavy duty rotors installed. So far so good.

General Comments:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a nice looking vehicle, but it is not comfortable for long trips. The adjustable seat doesn't seem to have the right combination of settings for most people who have driven my Jeep.

I had the same issue (2000 JEEP). I decided to have my own mechanic resurface my "JUNK" rotors, he had no explanation as to why the rotors wore down that quickly.

As a licensed class "A" Automotive Service Technician in Ontario, I have fond over the years that Metallic pads are often the cause of a pulsation in disc brakes. Resurfacing the rotors is only a temporary solution, especially when if the brake pads are not replaced at the same time.

The only real solution is to replace both the pads and the rotors with high quality after-market parts. (don't go for the economy parts available at some suppliers).

This is common for many vehicles with metallic brake pads, especially when there is a lot of start and stop driving as in most cities.

Good luck.

I'm just back from the dealer, it is the third trip for brake problems on my Jeep G .C. How about a recall?? What about when the warranty expires?? It has only 22.000 miles... Aloha from Maui. EA.

I also HAD this problem of severe brake pulsation with a new 1999 4WD Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I also dealt with rude dealer mechanic who informed me that this was a known problem and NOT covered under warranty. I re-ground and/or replaced several rotors at my own expense. Then, when recently having my key barrel replaced, I overheard a discussion between a mechanic and another customer, indicating that they were replacing her brakes, a $1,000 job, for only $100 dollars--including OUT OF Warranty VEHICLES! When I aggressively asked about this, I was informed that, although Jeep was not recalling the brakes, there was a service memo. I had the same job done for $100 and the brakes have been working extremely well for several thousand miles. What is this--a secret recall only when customers get really ticked?
