1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee I-6

Summary:

Very poor engineering and service. Don't buy one!!!

Faults:

This vehicle has had the following problems:

1) Brake rotors went bad @ 17000.

2) Transmission started whinning at about 9,000 miles.

3) Rear end gears had to be replaced at 11,000 miles.

4) So did the Transmission.

Beautiful lines on the car. I just hate the geartrain. Wish I'd never bought the thing. Can't get rid of it and can't sell it with the noise. Go figure!

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 V6

Summary:

I wish I had kept my old car!!

Faults:

Transmission wasn't shifting properly within 1 week of owning it, shocks make a grinding noise in extreme cold weather, had a stalling problem at about 1 month old and again recently (will usually start after waiting a few minutes), blew a radiator hose and had to be towed in, brake rotors are now going bad.

General Comments:

Very poor gas mileage for a V6, brakes do not feel good when stopping, usually jerks to stop at the end of braking, this is not a 30,000 dollar vehicle!!

The 4.0L is a STRAIGHT SIX, not a V6! If you want to see bad gas mileage, compare your mileage with a 4.3L Chevy Blazer V6, and you'll be happy with your I6 Jeep numbers. If your still worried about it, sell your SUV and buy a car!

I have a 1996 Cherokee Sport with a 4.0 Liter straight 6. The gas milage sucks and I can't seem to improve it although the car only has 26K on it. I've calculated the milage so many time because I can never believe a company could make a car with such poor gas milage. I get 10-12 MPG around town, and I don't live where I get caught in any traffic jams, or really slow moving traffic. I'm exceedingly disappointed. I had a 1986 Cherokee Pioneer before this with the 2.8 L V-6 that everybody told me was a crummy engine. It had very little power and got about 16-18 MPG around town. I expected the 1996 4 L to get better milage because I was told it was a better engine and more efficient. No way! Had I known the gas milage of the 1996 Cherokee 4 L, I would never have bought it. I'm also very disappointed that they no longer have those great side vent windows. As far as I'm concerned that was the wrong thing for Chrysler to cheap-out on. I don't know why EPA doesn't clobber Chrysler for their crappy gas milage - what a waste of this expensive and finite commodity.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L 6 Cyl

Summary:

I will never purchase another Jeep as long as I live!

Faults:

Steering problem that could not be corrected. Leak in transfer case. Power window noise on passenger side. Intermittent brake warning light that goes on and off. Brake rotors have been fixed twice.

General Comments:

I have been a Jeep owner for over 25 years. The quality of Jeep has gone since Chrysler has owned Jeep. I will never buy another Jeep as long as Chrysler owns Jeep. This 1999 Jeep purchase has been the worst mistake that I have ever made.

You should have waited until the 2000 models came out. First year production models are commonly known for their bugs. Chrysley has fixed most of these problems for the 2000+ models. I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it's Great! My advice: (purchase an extended warranty before the factory warranty runs out.)
