2004 Lexus LX 470 4.7

Summary:

Brand new at 175,000 miles, except for the AHC

Faults:

I have replaced the front struts, and flushed and refilled the AHC system.

General Comments:

The AHC system is at the end of its life. On bumpy roads the vehicle bounces, or floats up and down constantly. On a good four lane highway, it is a smooth and luxurious ride. That will be about a 2-3000 dollar repair. Otherwise this is a brilliant car that is tight as a drum, and works as well, and looks almost as good as the day it left the showroom.

I have also taken it off road a fair bit, and even in 18 inches of mud and water it stayed tidy and worked its way across in a rather boring manner. I truly love this vehicle and how overbuilt it is.

Hi, what’s AHC?

25th Oct 2019, 15:32

Automatic height control. Googled that answer in 1/10 the time it took you to post that question.

Thank you!!!

Why not just simply answer the gentlemen’s question? He might not have grown up with Google.

2011 Lexus LX 570 5.7 petrol

Summary:

Pleasant, but expensive and impractical

Faults:

The car wears out front tires in 30k miles. Other than that, everything on the vehicle has worked well.

General Comments:

Maintenance is difficult and expensive. The fuel tank is too small for a car of this size.

While the interior is well put together, many of the materials feel like they belong in a cheaper car. That said, it is a smooth and quiet car on the road, and has done well off the road. Interior space is good, but not outstanding.

Upon startup, the air conditioner can take up to one minute to turn on. Navigation system and Bluetooth are poorly designed, although reliable.

That vehicle has its roots back in the 40s when the Japanese copied a Willys Jeep they found in the Philippines. So its roots run deep.

But if you are not climbing mountains or navigating the jungles of Africa... it's probably overkill in everyday driving on the mean streets of America. It's big and heavy, and that works against it.

2001 Lexus LX 470 2UZ-FE 4.7l V8

Summary:

Quality

Faults:

Wheel speed sensors.

General Comments:

Brilliant truck actually. Purchased for $9900 on Craigslist with 130k. Everything on this truck still works. All the powered windows, seats, antenna, vents, heaters, everything, and on a 14 year old vehicle.

The AHC suspension still works properly. The paint looks like it's 2 years old. The wood and leather still look great.

The 4.7l 2UZ-FE is probably one of the best engines produced in the past 2 decades, and easily the best engine I've owned. My current other vehicle is an 06 Tundra with the same engine. They don't use oil (wear very slowly), produce plenty of power, are easy to work on, and as long as basic maintenance is performed, 300,000 miles is common, with 400+k not unheard of.

It is still a pleasure to drive, luxurious, very quiet and smooth, yet with the locking center diff, heavy duty axles, and purposeful design, a very capable off road vehicle, which we are looking forward to using here in Colorado.

Two negatives: the radio volume doesn't work. Probably related to amp problems that were common with this year. Second, the upper rear hatch has quite a bit of rust. Another common problem. I do 90% of all the maintenance on our vehicles and these are easy issues to fix, so no worries.

Bottom line - After now owning one, it's easy to see why you find so many Toyota LC or LX470s for sale with 200k plus miles: quality.

A bit late answer, but here's a trick for the radio volume knob - this should work on any car the same https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUleVk4IyDg

2003 Lexus LX 470

Summary:

It is an impractical jeep with a phony luxury disguise

Faults:

Exhaust rattle shortly after purchase. Needed a new harness from the factory that had a cost of about $800.

Thin, rough leather. The seats aren't comfortable compared to new LX470's because of the stiffness of the leather after 4 years.

Incompatible tow hitch mount. Toyota used some sort of cast material instead of material which seems to be narrower at the top than at the bottom. No aluminum tow hitches can fit. The spare tire is too close to the hitch mount so steel tow hitches cannot fit.

One of the third row seats no longer snaps in place on the floor. Cause is unknown.

General Comments:

It is a pretty nice looking car, especially with chrome factory wheels and dark monotone paint.

The interior is attractive, but uncomfortable.

It has low horsepower, but a nice amount of torque and tows pretty well, if you can get it to attach to a trailer properly.

The ride adjustment could lose at least one setting, and the height adjustment is complicated.

It has off-road technology that will never be used, the price reflects it.

It has very limited space compared to other, cheaper luxury SUV's.

The gas mileage is terrible for a car with so little horsepower.

The third row seat is only capable of seating 2 children or 0 adults (it is recommended for 3 adults).

It is too tall, wide, and high for a luxury car.

The second row seats are limited on leg room, but the middle seat is fantastic compared to other SUV's and has no transmission tunnel.

The dvd system is very complicated.

The Mike Levinson stereo system doesn't sound any better than standard stereo systems in most cars.

The navigation system still lists restaurants that went out of business before I was even born.

Maybe a minivan is more suitable for you!

6th Nov 2008, 14:47

It is a minivan, it sure is NOT a truck.

26th Jan 2009, 15:04

Yeah, not a truck. It's only based off the most successful and one of the most capable trucks in the history of mankind. People drive TLC's everywhere in the world in the harshest conditions and the LX is only a bit toned down from the TLC. The thing is more capable off road than 99.9% of vehicles.

25th Mar 2009, 04:12

Ha!...it's MARK Levinson sound system. Do you even own the vehicle?

Sure doesn't sound like it.

If you can't get comfortable in an LX then you're out of luck.
