1978 Lincoln Mark V 460

Summary:

The last of the great, gas guzzling American highway land yachts!

Faults:

When I bought the car it was rough at idle. Some checking turned up a bad EGR valve. Once replaced the car ran beautifully.

The air conditioning is currently not working. I plan to have it converted to R-134 in the spring.

General Comments:

This is one of the most awesome, full size highway cruisers ever made! The leather seats swallow you up and the ride is as soft as a cloud. You can almost land a helicopter on the hood it's so long !

The car was garage kept and driven less than 4000 miles a year since it was new. The original ice blue metallic paint is still gorgeous and the immaculate white leather interior with the white landau top gives it that Palm Beach look. It's the ultimate head turner!

1977 Lincoln Mark V 7.5L 460 c.i

Summary:

A true classic and very underrated. Virtually ignored by collectors and cruisers

Faults:

When I purchased it, it required a lot of money to get into good running order.

The water pump needed replacing.

The brakes were very expensive to replace since the rear calipers were different from the left and right.

The carb has needed multiple adjustments.

The choke tends to stick, causing it not to want to start when cold sometimes.

The power window motor on the driver's side broke not long after I purchased the car.

General Comments:

The car is very luxurious and feels like riding on air when traveling at high speeds.

There is surprisingly enough power to haul the over 6000 lb chassis 0-60 mph quite quickly and extremely smooth.

The classic 1970's "big luxury car" is definitely an attention getter among the small cars of today.

Surprisingly the back seat offers very little room considering the car is over 19 feet long.

Correction, the mark v was only 4650 lbs.

According to the title of my 1977 Mark V, the car weighs 6,352 pounds.

The weight listed is the gross vehicle weight. This is how much the vehicle weighs with a full tank of gas, fluids, and full payload. This curb weight is in fact 4600 lbs.

Summary:

Very luxurious, comfortable and unique

Faults:

The front end required new ball joints, shocks and tie rod ends recently.

I replaced the timing chain.

The air conditioning compressor leaks.

The front springs are sagging, but still functional.

General Comments:

This car is extremely reliable. Normal wear items such as brakes last a long time. Parts and cheap and service is quite easy. It makes up for the terrible gas mileage. 10-16 MPG.

The brakes are extremely good. The steering is too light and numb.

Its excellent for long highway trips, very comfortable and relaxing. The engine has plenty of power. It will go so fast on the highway, the speedometer needle wrapped all the way around the dial to point at zero, yet it still was very stable and quiet.

Around town, it's a handful in tight traffic.

Visibility is poor, to the side.

It's a very attractive car, and a fine example of the 1970's long hood personal luxury car. I love driving it, as it's so different compared to new cars.

However, the styling hurts the trunk room and access to the back seat, especially given the overall size of the car.

I'm curious as to how you derived the term "wrapped the needle around the dial" on the speedometer. MY '77 Lincoln Mark V has a rectangular speedometer on it.

Why would any one go 120 mph in a mark v?

In my mark v I think the spedometer only goes to 80, and I think when it goes to zero it is 120 mph.
