1993 Mazda MX6 LS V6 2.5L KLZE 24v DOHC

Summary:

V6 power with 4 cylinder gas mileage

Faults:

Well lets see first was the clutch started to slip at about 119,000 miles and then finally gave out at 120,000 miles.

Then about 2 days later I let the car run and idle and then it just died.

1 month later Distributor and Clutch were both fixed and the car never had another problem.

Engine almost blew up at 127,000 because I forgot to put the oil cap back on the engine. but quickly put oil in it and then started it back up and just had a little lifter tap in my engine. I was very thankful that it didn't blow up.

No further problems after that.

General Comments:

This is honestly the best car I have ever owned and it would probably still be running great as it was before it got impounded. I also felt very safe merging onto the freeway in this car too. I took a lot of road trips in it to california 3 times (5 hour drive). Car was litteraly driven daily to Las Vegas (1 hour drive). car even made it to Utah (8 hour drive) with no problems at all. Even got up to 32 mpg on the highway which is very good for a V6. also 140 mph+ easy. Walked all over Honda civics, Ford Mustang GT, and a Dodge Charger.

1993 Mazda MX6 LS Mystere 2.5 V6 KL-03 (a-spec)

Summary:

Fun and responsive

Faults:

Well, the MX6 has a number of problems like most cars.

Rear caliper seizing up constantly, fixed by buying Protege 5 calipers and pads for the rear (it's a direct bolt on).

The clutch 3" clutch line that goes to the reservoir, that can leave you stranded if you didn't switch it over to braided stainless steel.

Disty ignitor failures on my gen (93-94 OBDI), rotting sunroof and under or around the spoiler, trunk seal failing and getting water in the interior and rotting the floor.

The hydraulic lifters if you're stupid enough to run on non-synthetic oil; Mobil-1 or Royal Purple only people.

The valve cover gaskets... the only thing that really irritates me on this car, when the rear one goes. They don't last very long; 2-3 years seems. The front one takes like 20 minutes to do, the rear is like 3 hours.

Auto transmission (I don't have) is built by FORD and lives up to the FORD's quality, I have known many people that have it fail 6-12 months after a rebuild. To the point where they sell their car or do the auto to manual swap. SO NEVER BUY AN AUTO MX6, FORD PROBE or 626. Unless you have deep pockets.

General Comments:

The driver's seat is SO comfortable, and the side wraps around you, so you don't go flying into the passenger or door when turning hard (leather). I have a bad back, and this is the only vehicle I have been in where it doesn't bother me to do 3+ hours driving trips (have been in a 740i, sorry Bimmer guys, the seats bother me).

This car accelerates pretty decently. 15.5ish 1/4 mile (bone stock). Replacement 200HP KLZE engines are very cheap like $700-$1000, which drop you down into the high 14s (provided you get the Jspec ECU, or reprogram the A-spec ECU with the new VRIS Points). More info can be found at www.mx6.com, they are the gods of MX6s and 626s. www.probetalk.com for Probes.

The stock suspension blows. The car sits too high and is pretty easy to spin out on corners.

Car looks sexy, clean lines, it's not a beast, but gets the job done.

The stock clutch is a complete joke, slips brand new... Upgrade it to a stage 0 or 1. Anything higher beats up the tranny, and makes stop and go traffic lots of fun!

This many seem like a lot, but I have driving the living sh*t out of this car since I got it. And it has never left me stranded once. The car isn't too bad to work on. Some things can be a pain to do. The fuel economy is okay. Get about 650KM highway /tank and 400ish city /tank. Tank is 50 litres or 51. Never drove it to total empty LOL.

Rear seat actually fits people, as long as they aren't 6' or taller or fat. It does fit a car seat in both positions. However is a pain to get in and out.

In conclusion to all of this, I fixed just about everything on the car myself, except the clutch and exhaust. I did this with no experience. You educate yourself; say MX6.com, AllDataDIY, Hayes and Chilton. You'd be surprised what you learn. Currently training now as a truck and motorcoach Freightliner specialist.
