2002 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C240 2.6L V6

Summary:

Will sell it once the warranty has stopped

Faults:

Owner of a 2002 C240 in So.CAL.

Three faults occured in April 2007: Light Sensor, ESP, and Check Engine.

The driving gear is stuck in 1, so I only can drive up to 20~30 mph while the RPM is between 2000~4000. Thank god we purchased the 4yr/10Kmi extended warranty. I called my Mercedes dealer in CA for a service appointment. The service consultant informed me that a loaner car cannot be provide. Loaner car only goes to cars under original factory warranty and cars bought in this specific dealership.

Anyways, it ends up that these three faults on my car was caused by low battery. The battery was replaced and adjusted to 13.8V. Computer sensors reset. I was charged for $138 for battery and $192 for labor.

My question is "Why is the low battery fault did not trip?", service consultant answered "low battery will trip only if the battery is stopped from charging by the alternator." My suggestion for all of you is to measure the voltage across the battery when you have any intermittent malfunction/faults. Changing an OEM battery by yourself can save you at least $192 labor fee. If you need computer sensor reset, call 1800-MERCEDES.

I have had the problem for months and could not figure it out, until I came across this blog. Dude you have saved me so much money. I just changed the battery myself and my 2002 C240 no longer is stuck in 1st gear, no longer has fault lights on, and sounds like she is all brand new! Thank You!

Summary:

Excellent Buy

Faults:

I had water leaking from the front end and they said that they had to replace something with the heater. I forgot the name of the part, but it was $150.00 for me to fix. Plus I got a oil change and that cost another $150.00 the total that it has cost me to fix or service was $350.00, but out here in Ventura we have good dealer that specializes in working on Mercedes Benz and he gives good prices for servicing the car. I recently got a quote on how much it would be to do a tune-up and it will run me $350.00 bucks.

General Comments:

The car as far as safety, comfort, and everything else is a perfect car to me. The car literally makes no noise. Takes off fast if you barely press on pedal. Nice, safe car especially with having two kids. Having 8 air bags and fast brakes I don't have to worry about being really injured if crashed into. Good with gas too.

You got lucky with having no problems with almost 80,000 miles on the car. This Mercedes, along with many other models, are known to be the most unreliable cars. I honestly don't consider the C-class Mercedes a luxury car, it compares more with a Camry or Jetta fully loaded. I owned a CLK430 when they first came out, but had to sell it due to electrical issues. I bought the Lexus SC430. It has been great. Now with a kid I drive the Lexus LX470 and my wife has the RX400h. All three are great cars. The SC430 is a great weekend cruiser. If you have a good independent mechanic then your good to go. They will save you tons of money.

2002 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C-Coupe 2.3L Kompressor

Summary:

Head - turning Pocket Rocket

Faults:

Sunroof motor quit, replaced by dealer.

Cup holder and luggage compartment cover (both plastic) broke and were replaced by dealer.

The most serious problem, which took two trips to the dealer, was the "Check Engine" light came on. Apparently it was a bad oxygen sensor and it was replaced the second time.

General Comments:

We bought this car for our daughter. We looked at several small cars, but since she is quite short, she had trouble seeing out the rear windows because of height of the rear seats. This car has a separate window under the main rear window to increase rear visibility.

This car is fun to drive! Even with the automatic, it has as much if not more acceleration than the 1973 Corvette I had. Her choice of color was Citron Green, so just about everybody stares at it, trying to figure out what kind of car it is.

We did not get the factory CD player as you lose the glove compartment. After market players that directly connect to the factory radio are non-existent as Mercedes uses fiber optics to connect the player to the radio. I did find a trunk (boot) mounted Alpine unit that connects through the antenna and plays through the FM radio.

My only complaint about the car is it requires premium fuel (91 octane or greater). It does get 32 mpg at 75 mph.

It requires 4 snow tires for winter driving.

What makes this car special is the panorama sunroof. It's like driving a convertible without all the wind. We also opted for the leather seats, which brings the cost of the car to $34,000. The leather, while pricey, is well worth the extra cost because of the comfort factor - Mercedes cloth seats are very hard and slippery.

ALL cars need 4 snows in winter!!! (at least they do if you get snow) It's both a misconception and deadly to put snows on the drive wheels only, If a tire dealer tries to tell you this is safe, LEAVE!! It's actually proven that with front drive you should put the snows on the rear, otherwise the back will lose traction and put you into a spin, which is exactly why you need 4. On a rear drive car such as yours, 4 snows will leave even front drivers (with all seasons) well behind. Besides, if you can afford a new car, 4 tires are cheap insurance, it all comes down to this: How much is your (or your daughter's) life worth?

Not trying to be snotty, just trying to dispel a myth, one unfortunately that goes back to my grandfather's day when they didn't know any better.

I actually had the engine light on for some time now, as well. Had it cleared once, but the mechanic says is just a sensor and nothing to worry about. The car is running just fine anyway. What annoyed me the most was changing the bushings twice. Other than that.. not much to complain. Since one wants to drive a sports car, the usual blind spots are obvious, as well as the ride being a bit rougher than a regular sedan. My coupe comes with a standard/manual transmission, and I find the gear knob a bit rough as well. Conclusion, nice ride, though my next car will be a sedan. Guess I'm getting old..hehe.
