1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6

Summary:

Overall it's good. Just make sure you've got a lot of money to fix everything

Faults:

I bought my 99 Cougar in January of 2010; looks great and runs perfectly fine. But since I've had it, whenever it is cold out, and I start my car and put it in drive or reverse, the engine hums and idles extremely high. The place I got it, they said they had it in about 5 different shops and diagnosed it, and nobody could figure out what is wrong with it.

Also recently my car started with an oil leak. And if I keep my wheel straight or turn it right when I get to about 35 mph or more, my engine makes a weird noise, but when I turn my wheel left, the noise goes away.

General Comments:

The car looks sharp, is very fast, but I've had a lot of problems with the Cougar.

Oh, and never put a system in it, it'll drain your battery and mess up your alternator.

1999 Mercury Cougar 2.6L V6

Summary:

We bought the car used, but has been well worth the money we paid for it. No complaints

Faults:

Alternator at around 100K, and now at 148K and 2 batteries around the same time.

Sun roof getting stuck open in Jan 2010.

Oil leak from valve cover gaskets around 125K.

Clutch due a change out; driven hard, but no failure.

General Comments:

My eldest son bought this car. We have had most of the same problems with batteries, alternators and 1 incident with the sun roof.

All in all, has been good car for what we paid for it. He worked at the local auto parts store as a Assistant Manager and researched the parts failure. It's not the car, these parts interchange with other models. Alternator failure is a design flaw. Why put the alternator on the bottom of the engine compartment where water can get to it. Every part he bought from the store, he got the lifetime warranty, which is the way to go. It has saved cost greater than the warranty cost.

We now have a service engine light and battery light on. Car has pretty much sat for 2 years. Read on here about the wiring harness for the battery, and believe service engine light came on because of fuel injector cleaning we just had done.

Still have factory clutch, but needs replacing now.

1999 Mercury Cougar 2.0

Summary:

I would love the car if it didn't have so many problems

Faults:

I'm having many troubles with this car.

I get a burnt smell when it's running and when I first start it up.

I have had loss of power now for the longest time, and now all of a sudden the turn signals and hazards stopped working. I have replaced the sensor; that should have fixed it, and now I've got nothing.

If anyone knows what I can do to fix this car, I would really be happy.

I have only owned this car for about a year and now I'm half tempted to sell it.

I had to replace a thermostat and water pump already, and now I'm just dealing with too much.

If someone could email me at southpolre@yahoo.com and help me out? Thanks.

1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5 V6 5 speed

Summary:

Bi-product of Found On Road Dead, I wouldn't recommend buying one

Faults:

Power mirrors and locks failed to operate anymore; checked fuses and they were good, shorted wire somewhere.

Push button for the rear hatch doesn't work.

Rear shocks collapsed at 90k miles.

Clutch slave cylinder and clutch went bad at 94k miles.

Lights have always flickered on it, electrical issue.

General Comments:

I really don't like it much. I can't be too unhappy because I got it for cheap due to a cracked rear bumper and dented fender.

The cabin area is very crowded and the seats are very uncomfortable.

The engine bay area is noisy.

The trunk release lever in in an inconvenient location.

The car is underpowered as well.

The only real positives about it is it gets OK fuel economy for a V6, and the heater blows nice and hot. Also it looks cool.
