2000 Mercury Cougar V6

Summary:

Good if you lease it or sell it before 3 years

Faults:

The windshield cracked out of the blue and had to be replaced

The sunroof assembly broke and the whole unit had to be replaced (at a not so cheap price of $3,700!!!)

Total cost: almost five thousand dollars, the car is only 5 years old and this happened at 68,000 km... totally unacceptable

As you can imagine Ford denies there is something wrong with the parts and they will not even consider a recall.

General Comments:

Great looking car, I really enjoyed it... but at this point I'm ready to sell it and will never ever buy another Ford product

No wonder why Japanese automakers are totally dominating the market... my next car will be a Toyota.

2000 Mercury Cougar V6

Summary:

Great looking car, but lots of problems

Faults:

There is significant hesitation upon acceleration especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, driving uphill and under a load. It seems to happen more during or after it rains. My dealer could not find the problem after replacing the fuel pump/sensor and keeping the car for three weeks. Still don't know what it is. Another mechanic (friend) recommended checking the transmission out and some sensor. Will try that next. Sad that Ford doesn't seem to be able to help.

There is definite hesitation when the A/C is on.

Just recently the engine temp. gauge moved into the red. Replaced the thermostat and checked the coolant levels. Worked for three days then the gauge moved into the red again.???

The trunk latch doesn't always catch and the hatch bounces back up. Just greased the springs. Works fine now except when it's really cold out.

The hatch seal does come off, but we glued it back on ourselves.

General Comments:

I love this car.

It's quick once it decides that 'yes, she did press the accelerator' and great on gas mileage.

I don't like how stiff the suspension is as I feel every bump, but I just pretend it's a Vette.

I also had to put a pad in the rear seat to accommodate my son's car seat. He loves the car too.

2000 Mercury Cougar V6

Summary:

Love hate situation

Faults:

Stalled in the middle of a busy intersection one week after buying it.

Two weeks after I bought it, the sunroof track broke. I had it replaced a month later, and the second one did the same thing. It is now screwed shut.

Instrument panel is a Christmas Tree all of the time for no reason.

Hit something in the middle of the road and blew two tires in one night, very expensive tires, and only made by one manufacturer.

General Comments:

I love the looks of the car and have had many comments on the style.

It handles corners beautifully and speed gets away from you.

Not too good in the snow, traction control makes no difference.

Problems never seem to stop coming.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

I have looked up tires for my Cougar. Go to Tirerack.com. I found high performance tires for under $100.

2000 Mercury Cougar V6 2.5 liter

Summary:

Never again

Faults:

My idle air intake valve has had to be replaced. Unfortunately the problem still exists. This happened within one month of ownership. My airbag sensors needed to be replaced about a week after the Idle air intake valve. After having the cougar for a week the flex pipe needed to be replaced. Fuel pump sensors and water pump sensors need to be replaced. My car is now having difficulty shifting in to second and third gear when coming from a complete stop. It bucks like it is a standard transmission and I am learning how to drive.

General Comments:

This car has serious problems. I always wanted a sports car, but this cougar has cost me more money than it is worth. They are horrible in the snow even with the so called traction control. I cannot wait to get rid of it.

Your transmission is probably failing. This is the same symptom as my daughter's 2k Cougar. The internal clutch in the torque converter self-destructed, sending fine friction material particles through the cooling lines, requiring the radiator to be changed as well. (Dealer said they could not be cleaned out.) Luckily the car was still under warranty. One dealer tried updating the trans computer, which did nothing. You probably didn't want to hear this, sorry.
