1990 Nissan 240SX Fastback 2.4L

Summary:

It's a great first car

Faults:

Had to replace radiator. It went bad after going up a mountain.

Replaced battery.

Replaced fuel pump.

Replaced exhaust.

Replaced headlights.

Replaced brake disc.

Had to fix broken seat. Twice.

Electric antenna broke and was left in its upright position. Went through a car wash. Snapped at the base.

Others that I have forgotten.

General Comments:

Reliability: Darn thing just won't DIE! I bought it in 1997 as a college car with 111,xxx on the odometer. Five years later, it now reads 211,xxx! I can't believe it's still running on the same engine. I'm pretty disciplined with the maintenance though so it helps.

Performance: Very peppy, especially on the start. Red light turns green and off you go! Jack rabbit starts are fun. Just don't speed! Steering is very responsive. Rear wheel driving is a little different, but you can get the hang of it pretty quickly. Only had one incident of fish-tailing in the rain. Scary!

Future: The 240SX will remain as my daily-driver. I've recently upgraded to a 1994 Acura NSX which will be my weekend car!

1990 Nissan 240SX 2.4

Summary:

Worth the money

Faults:

Not much, the automatic antenna broke, the stock fog lights don't work. Also, there is a rattlling when I first start the car in the morning, although I know the problem is the exhaust pipes, I will fix it asap.

General Comments:

This is my second car as compared to my first one (Honda Prelude 2.0 1987) This one is nicer looking, and performs faster and way more reliably than that of the Honda. It is a great car to have, you can alter its look and or power with aftermarket parts and or performance parts which are fairly easy to acquire.

1990 Nissan 240SX 2.4L

Summary:

Great handling -- when the car starts

Faults:

The air flow meter died and needed to be replaced. $630 to buy a new one.

Idle pulley died and needed to be replaced.

Car overheated for several months. Replaced thermostats, flushed cooling system, did everything imaginable and couldn't fix it. Then one day it stopped overheating on its own.

Speedometer stops working every now and then.

Odometer freezes every now and then. One time it froze for over 600km.

Car is losing oil very quickly, but it is not leaking. We can't figure out where its going!

Cigarette lighter adapter keeps coming out.

Very strange rattling noise coming from under the hood. We think it's the motor, but who knows what it could be.

No leg room anywhere in the car -- including the driver's seat.

General Comments:

Other than the numerous problems I've had with this car, I love it because of the way it handles. I held on to this car for a long time thinking the problems would go away, just because I love this car, but the problems never went away.

I'm not saying this is a bad car. For all I know, I may be the only one who is having problems. But with the amount of problems I've had, and the amount of money I've had to spend in the few months I've had this car, I would not recommend it.

I've had that same mysterious noise coming from under the hood. We think it is the lifters.

I have it too, I'm almost sure its the starter, when it starts it slides of and spins loosely, if its when you first start it, its most likely that.

I have a problem with my 92 240sx/SE fastback. It keeps over heating, weird thing about it is that when I was about to install a thermostat, when I opened the housing there was none. But it didn't overheat at all when there was no thermostat, now it keeps over heating like crazy. I have flushed, check the water pump, thermostat sensor, it still won't go away. One more weird thing is the cooling system seems to be pressurizing. I am planning to take the thermostat of and see whet happens.

I would have to say that Nissan rules. I have had my 240 for a long while now and its been great to me. The parts are a little expensive, but they don't brake as often. In addition this is a great little speedy car to have if you like speed. My baby's been great to me and I am not leaving her.
