1995 Nissan 240SX SE 2.4L

Summary:

Endearing affection

Faults:

Nothing but routine maintenance.

General Comments:

I bought the car as a commuter 9 years ago. Anyone who's ever owned a 240SX will understand what I mean when I say the car becomes more than just a car, there becomes an endearing affection to it. I soon stopped using it as a commuter and started to limit the miles I put on it. What you can never get over is how beautiful the car is. The lines are gorgeous very sexy and sleek. I have owned the car for over 9 years now, and I never get tired of driving it or looking at.

1995 Nissan 240SX SE - Modified KA24DE 2.4L I4

Summary:

Agile, predictable, better

Faults:

Water pump.

Alignment.

Fuel injector.

Floors are wearing.

RUST is the only real problem (which is a big one).

Seatbelt tensioners wear out.

Automatic tranny went out from abuse (wanted to replace anyway).

Really nothing significant has ever failed me, and even when the water pump went out, I was still able to drive the car, and all the gauges allowed me to drive and be careful not to overheat

Rubber engine mounts and rear subframe bushings will be bad on older cars.

General Comments:

My favorite car in the world; takes corners like a dream; can turn in at any reasonable speed, and you always know what the car will do. Needs quite a few aftermarket parts to make it this way, but well worth the effort.

Reliability is very high; small problems, but the engine can take a beating and keep going.

The KA24DE lacks power, but has excellent response and torque.

The manual transmission makes the car lighter and quicker, very agile and predictable, wet or dry, even where 90% of other cars would be in danger, the 240 can pull through with no problems. Passengers tend to be very surprised at what the car can do.

Not for novice drivers however, because the tail can get out very easy in a turn.

Overall a very good car for getting around twists and turns faster than almost anything else out there.

1995 Nissan 240SX SE 2.4

Summary:

Freaking amazing

Faults:

Just bought the car and it was in really bad shape. Had to replace all 4 brake rotors and new pads; cost $600.

Other than that, the check engine light is on for no reason and the steering column is messed up. All of this is due to the prior owner not properly maintaining the car.

Also the tach no longer works, which is weird because everything else does when going in a straight line. The steering wheel points to the right, no pull though, so I have no clue what's up with that.

General Comments:

My first car was a 1991 Nissan 240SX SE; absolutely loved it, but at around 200,000 miles it quit on me, so I sold it and bought a 2003 Ford Mustang; worst mistake ever.

Anyway, back to the good stuff; drove the car 140 miles the first day. It drove like it was brand new, excluding the brakes. Get up and go is awesome in this car, absolutely love it. The gas mileage is good, gas however is not considering you have to put the good stuff in it (93 octane).

The only bad thing about these cars is things break all at once, and they become expensive fast.

1995 Nissan 240SX SE KA24DE-T

Summary:

Lots of miao still left in this KA-T!

Faults:

Exhaust pipe rusted and broke - re-welded - few weeks later - friend "man"drel-bent muffler backing it into a curb; no other damage.

When I bought it - original owner was reluctant to e-test it. Needed replacement of 2 oxygen sensors and some carburetor cleaner sprayed into throttle body.

Heat shields made rattling noise on the stock exhaust so I popped them off.

The only maintenance item I did during the time I used the car was to replace the rear passenger caliper that was seized. And paid 60 dollars for a used one.

Nissan 240 has one of the best / helpful bunch of people / clubs in North America.

General Comments:

Coming over from Corolla GTS (1991 AE92), the KA24DE has much more lower pickup, but is weak and feels deceiving at the upper rpm bandwidth past 5900.

Stock suspension was somewhat mushy, steering is precise, but car does feel heavy, brakes are too small for car this size and can get hot when used too often - aka track conditions.

I think it's a great car and started making some minor modifications to it. Got lowered springs on it, thick rear anti-sway bar, front/rear strutbars - difference was immediate - car has almost no sway and energy transfers through the entire body making end come out more.

Got a T25 turbo setup on it (often referred to as KA-T from KA24DE-T) - together with the suspension setup - right now I couldn't ask for a better ride.

Only weaknesses (to be upgraded) are: clutch (soon), brakes, age of the car (only about 3 cm of rust in one spot, but I know it's just matter of time) and tire wear (hehe).

Update: October 12, 2006 (227,000 km)

Car is very fast, but definitely some bugs to work out with the turbo setup - don't bother with used turbos. Go with rebuilt or new snails.

Also: starter ground point is loose - sometimes the starter rotates normal / slowly - other times it doesn't want to crank over the motor (to be fixed shortly).
